Macroecological relationships of ant diversity with increasing aridity in Australian tropical savannas: contrasting responses of epigaeic and hypogaeic assemblages

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Studies using climatic gradients play a key role in our understanding of the importance of rainfall and temperature as factors regulating species diversity and distribution, and thus of likely responses to climate change. However, such studies currently consider above‐ground species only, ignoring the diverse hypogaeic (subterranean) invertebrate fauna.

Linking species distribution models with population abundance to support adaptive fisheries management

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Understanding how environmental variability structures essential fish habitat (EFH) is central to managing keystone populations in dynamic marine ecosystems. Using nearly three decades of standardized survey data (1994–2021) from the Adriatic Sea, we present the first basin‐scale, process‐based framework linking estimated habitat suitability and ...

Incorporating sampling bias into ENM/SDM permutation tests: new methods and a case study on neotropical ants

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Spatial sampling bias in occurrence data can generate spurious environmental associations in models of species distributions and ecological niches, and can also undermine inferences based on permutation tests made using these models. Geographic randomization tests are often used to generate distributions of expected behavior under the null hypothesis ...

Mechanistic Origins of Structural Failure in Deeply‐Lithiated LixMoS2

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Global optimization and ab initio molecular dynamics reveal how Li drives the 2H to 1T′ phase transformation in MoS2 and where the layered framework begins to fracture. Controlled pre‐lithiation stabilizes 1T′ and significantly delays the onset of structural failure, while opening out‐of‐plane Li pathways, offering design rules for robust, high‐rate ...

Quantitative Insights into Atomic Scale Oil–Clay Adhesion Governing Shale Oil Retention and Mobility

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Atomic force microscopy reveals a clear adhesion hierarchy between shale oil and clay minerals, governed by nanoscale surface chemistry. Strong interactions on chlorite and illite arise from abundant polar sites and cation bridging, whereas weaker coupling on montmorillonite limits interfacial binding.
