This work highlights morphological variations in skulls and humerus in extant rodents with varying locomotion, to predict this parameter in the extinct species Diamantomys luederitzi (Early Miocene, Napak, Uganda). The use of LDA and phylogenetic flexible discriminant analyses with different data sets (measurements and landmarks) allow a better ...

Our morphometric analyses permit to discuss the putative behavioral and environmental parameters shaping the skull of ground squirrels in relation to their digging activity. Our paper reports that these sciurid rodents do show convergent morphological traits on both cranium and mandible in relation to fossorial life.

A Distinct Role of the Queen in Coordinated Workload and Soil Distribution in Eusocial Naked Mole-Rats [PDF]
We investigated how group members achieve collective decision-making, by considering individual intrinsic behavioural rules and behavioural mechanisms for maintaining social integration.

Clocks Ticking in the Dark: A Review of Biological Rhythms in Subterranean African Mole-Rats
Biological rhythms are rhythmic fluctuations of biological functions that occur in almost all organisms and on several time scales. These rhythms are generated endogenously and entail the coordination of physiological and behavioural processes to ...

Postnatal ontogeny of the femur in fossorial and semiaquatic water voles in the 3D‐shape space
Abstract Water voles of the genus Arvicola constitute an excellent subject to investigate to which extent function affects postnatal developmental growth of limb structures in phylogenetically close species. We performed a comparative analysis of postweaning femur form changes between Arvicola sapidus (semiaquatic) and Arvicola scherman (fossorial ...

Dental peculiarities in the silvery mole-rat: an original model for studying the evolutionary and biological origins of continuous dental generation in mammals [PDF]
Unravelling the evolutionary and developmental mechanisms that have impacted the mammalian dentition, since more than 200 Ma, is an intricate issue. Interestingly, a few mammal species, including the silvery mole-rat Heliophobius argenteocinereus, are ...

ABSTRACT The naked mole‐rat (Heterocephalus glaber) has fascinated zoologists for at least half a century. It has also generated considerable biomedical interest not only because of its extraordinary longevity, but also because of unusual protective features (e.g.

Biogeography of Angolan rodents: The first glimpse based on phylogenetic evidence
Abstract Aim Assessment of phylogenetic diversity and biogeographical affinities of the rodent fauna from one of the most neglected areas in Africa. Location Angola (with biogeographical implications in adjacent areas). Methods Inference of mitochondrial phylogenies for rodent genera occurring in Angola, delimitation of molecular operational taxonomic ...

Naked mole‐rats (Heterocephalus glaber) do not specialise in cooperative tasks
It has been controversially discussed whether non‐breeders in naked mole‐rats belong to distinct castes that specialise permanently or temporarily in specific cooperative tasks. In this paper, we show that non‐breeding individuals vary in overall cooperative investment, but do not specialise in specific work tasks.

Social structure predicts genital morphology in African mole-rats. [PDF]
BACKGROUND:African mole-rats (Bathyergidae, Rodentia) exhibit a wide range of social structures, from solitary to eusocial. We previously found a lack of sex differences in the external genitalia and morphology of the perineal muscles associated with the
