Warming increases trophic cascade strength in an aquatic food chain
Using experiments and Bayesian dynamical modelling, we demonstrate that warming strengthens trophic cascades in an aquatic food chain through coordinated, temperature‐dependent shifts in predator, prey and resource traits. By tracing indirect effects to underlying mechanisms, our study shows how climate change can amplify predator impacts and ...

Bound by blood and bloodshed: Sibling ties and participation in genocidal violence
Abstract Focusing on the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, we examine how sibling relationships—one of the most salient familial bonds—influence individual engagement in violence during mass atrocity. Drawing on an adaptation of differential association and social learning theories for contexts of mass atrocity, we analyze a novel dataset linking over 300,000 ...

Determinants of case outcomes in Rwanda's postgenocide gacaca courts
Abstract Transitional justice trials have become a central mechanism for addressing mass violence and human rights violations, yet little is known about the determinants of case outcomes within these courts—particularly in domestic contexts. This study examines Rwanda's gacaca courts, a localized transitional justice system that tried people suspected ...

Preemptive Entry and Technology Diffusion: The Market for Drive‐In Theaters
ABSTRACT This article studies entry preemption in new industries. We first test a key prediction of dynamic entry games: Entry preemption is most relevant in intermediate‐sized markets, where firms face highest uncertainty about future entry. Using US drive‐in theater market (1945–1957) data, we find robust evidence for this non‐monotonic relationship ...

Abstract This study examines the adaptive market hypothesis in the prewar and wartime Japanese stock market using a new market capitalization‐weighted price index. First, we find that the degree of market efficiency varies over time and with major historical events. This implies that the hypothesis is supported in this market.

Police department design, political pressure, and racial inequality in arrests
Abstract This paper theorizes a source of bias in discretionary arrests: strategic limits on police officer learning. Officers have a variety of tactics at their disposal besides arrest that they use for less serious offenses when they judge the underlying behavior to be less severe. In departments led by a chief with special expertise in crime control,
