Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 1967
A PAPER by A. Rose, B.Sc., C.Eng., A.M.R.I.N.A., A.M.I.Mar.E. (Michell Bearings Ltd.) read to The Institute of Marine Engineers in London on 24th January, emphasised that reliability is the allāimportant factor in the design of marine bearings and, because of this, design methods tend to be conservative.

A Survey of Rolling-Bearing Failures
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Conference Proceedings, 1969The condition of approximately 600 suspect rolling bearings from electrical machinery was examined. This number did not represent a high failure rate in relation to the number in use at the time, but afforded a basis for the assessment of the frequency of the various types of failure. The grease in use was the R.N.

Bearing failures diagnosis and investigation
Wear, 1973Abstract Successful failure investigation enables satisfactory remedial measures to be effected and can lead to improved design embodying greater reliability. As technological progress advances, bearing failure mechanisms are becoming increasingly complex and it is not always possible to give reliable on site diagnoses. A full investigation using all

Failure mechanisms in motor bearings
Engineering Failure Analysis, 2005Abstract Defective bearings of a motor were investigated for possible mechanisms leading to their premature failure during manufacturing. Detailed studies including visual examination, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were performed to determine the root cause(s) for failure.

Failure of a set of roller bearings
Wear, 1957Abstract The failure of a set of roller bearings operating under unusual conditions has been investigated. The findings have disclosed interesting features relating to the metallurgy of the rollers, the mechanism of failure and the evaluation of oils used for lubricating such bearings.

Bearing Cage Dynamics: Cage Failure and Bearing Life Estimation
Nowadays, given the widespread use of rolling bearings in mechanical applications, an important topic is investigate which parameters influence their wear in order to estimate the real bearing life. The cage is one of the critical element in the bearing, its dynamics is complex and nonlinear due to the intermittent contacts with various elements (e.g ...Neglia, Silvio Giuseppe +2 more

Failure analysis of an aero engine ball bearing
Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention, 2006Abstract An aero engine failed due to the misalignment of the ball bearing fitted on the main shaft of the engine. The aero engine incorporates two independent compressors: a six-stage axial flow LP compressor and a nine-stage axial flow HP compressor.

Bearing Friction and Failure Mechanisms
2016The total friction torque acting on the bearing is caused by the bearing loads, viscous friction of oil, and seals of the bearing: $$ {M}_t={M}_l+{M}_v+{M}_s ...

Failure tolerance of load-bearing hierarchical networks
Physical Review E, 2011We investigate the statistics and dynamics of failure in a two-dimensional load-bearing network with branching hierarchical structure, and its variants. The variants strengthen the original lattice by using connectivity strategies which add new sites to the maximal cluster in top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top versions.

Failure Analysis of a Ceramic Bearing Acetabular Component
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 2007Alternative bearings have been explored in an attempt to improve the longevity of total hip prostheses. A Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved clinical study of a nonmodular acetabular component consisting of a porous metal shell, compression-molded polyethylene, and a ceramic liner inlay was discontinued following reports of early failures ...
