Periodic saltation over hydrodynamically rough beds: aeolian to aquatic [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Mechanics, 2015
We determine approximate analytical solutions for average periodic trajectories of particles that are accelerated by the turbulent shearing of a fluid between collisions with a hydrodynamically rough bed. We indicate how the viscosity of the fluid may influence the collisions with the bed.

From Single Atoms to Nanoparticles: Pathways Toward Efficient and Durable Pt/TiO2 Photocatalysts

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Platinum single atoms on TiO2 nanosheets evolve into clusters and nanoparticles under ethanol photoreforming and thermal treatments. By controlling deposition and post‐treatments, particle size and location on specific facets are modulated. The study reveals how stability pathways determine efficiency, guiding the design of more durable photocatalysts.

Basal roughness of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet in relation to flow speed and basal thermal state

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2020
Basal motion of ice sheets depends in part on the roughness and material properties of the subglacial bed and the occurrence of water. To date, basal motion represents one of the largest uncertainties in ice-flow models. It is that component of the total

Effects of Regularly Arrayed Roughness on Flow Resistance and Turbulent Flow Structure in an Open Channel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Effects of regularly arrayed cylindrical and sphere roughness on flow resistance and turbulent characteristics in an open channel have been investigated over a completely rough-bed with uniform stainless steel rods and glass beads.

Influence of bed roughness on near-bed turbulent flow characteristics

open access: yesInternational Journal of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, 2020
Influence of bed roughness on near-bed flow characteristics is of considerable importance, especially in turbulent flows over rough beds. This experimental study is devoted to insight various turbulent flow characteristics such as velocity distributions, Reynolds shear stresses (RSS) and velocity power spectra at the groove, lee and crest level of ...

Breathable Graphene Oxide‐Polymer Composite Membranes With Two‐Step Barrier Mechanism Against Nerve Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Breathable membranes that reject chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are required for next‐generation protective apparel. A dual‐function graphene oxide (GO)‐polyamine architecture is introduced that addresses the long‐standing tradeoff between vapor transmission and CWA selectivity.

Effect of Bed Roughness and Negative Step on Characteristics of Hydraulic Jump in Rectangular Stilling Basin

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2022
Water flow often releases excess energy after passing through gates and spillways. This energy should be reduced to avoid the destruction of downstream structures. The hydraulic jump, a natural phenomenon, inevitably reduces incoming flow energy.
