A power law distribution in patients' lengths of stay in hospital [PDF]
The distribution of patients' lengths of stay in English hospitals is measured by using routinely collected data from 11 years. It is found to be well approximated by a power law distribution spanning over more than 3 decades.

OB-stars as extreme condition test beds [PDF]
Massive stars are inherently extreme objects, in terms of radiation, mass loss, rotation, and sometimes also magnetic fields. Concentrating on a (personally biased) subset of processes related to pulsations, rapid rotation and its interplay with mass ...

Estimation of the bed shear stress in vegetated and bare channels with smooth beds
The shear stress at the bed of a channel influences important benthic processes such as sediment transport. Several methods exist to estimate the bed shear stress in bare channels without vegetation, but most of these are not appropriate for vegetated ...

Induction of diabetes in three different mouse strains uniformly resulted in an increase in TNAP activity and a reduction in pyrophosphate (PPi) in the circulation. Inhibition of TNAP restored plasma PPi. Diabetes‐induced calcification in the media layer of the aorta was detected only in the Abcc6−/− strain, which is predisposed to ectopic ...

Factors affecting estuarine populations of Nereocystis luetkeana in Kachemak Bay, Alaska [PDF]
Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2003Nereocystis luetkeana forms extensive kelp beds in Kachemak Bay, Alaska. Salinity and turbidity gradients apparently regulate kelp bed distribution throughout this estuary.

Enzymatic degradation of biopolymers in amorphous and molten states: mechanisms and applications
This review explains how polymer morphology and thermal state shape enzymatic degradation pathways, comparing amorphous and molten biopolymer structures. By integrating structure–reactivity principles with insights from thermodynamics and enzyme engineering, it highlights mechanisms that enable efficient polymer breakdown.

Nationwide Survey of Atopic Myelitis and Plexin D1‐Immunoglobulin G‐Related Pain
ABSTRACT Objective To elucidate the features of plexin D1‐immunoglobulin (Ig)G‐associated neuropathic pain and its relationship to atopic myelitis (AM) in a nationwide Japanese survey. Methods A preliminary survey questionnaire was sent to 1574 selected departments (neurology and pediatrics/pediatric neurology) to explore the numbers of AM and plexin ...
