From biology to biotechnology: Host‐regulation factors from parasitoid wasps are a source of bioactive molecules with translational potential

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Parasitoid wasps deploy maternal and embryonic factors to reprogramme host physiology. Venom, calyx fluid, polydnaviruses, teratocytes and larval secretions act in a coordinated, compartmentalised manner. Host‐regulation factors are promising sources of insecticidal, antimicrobial and bioinspired translational molecules.

Hydromulches in Organic Strawberry Production: Effects on Densities of Insect Pests and Natural Enemies

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Liquid‐sprayable cellulose hydromulches (HM) are alternatives to plastic polyethylene (PE) mulches for weed suppression in organic agriculture. However, their impact on arthropod pests and natural enemies remains unexplored. Various HMs made of shredded newsprint, water and guar gum were compared against white‐on‐black PE mulch, paper sheet ...

Six Decades of the Sterile Insect Technique Applied to Ceratitis capitata in Israel: Evolution, Methodology and Socio‐Economic Perspectives

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata; Medfly) has been a primary agricultural pest in Israel for over a century. While chemical control remains the prevalent choice for its management, the integration of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) into the management programme for this pest has been explored and implemented in various ...

First Record of Larval Parasitism in Disonycha glabrata (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) by Myiopharus ancilla (Walker) (Diptera: Tachinidae)

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The amaranth flea beetle, Disonycha glabrata (F.), is a major pest of amaranth crops (Amaranthus spp.) in the United States. Despite its economic impact, its natural enemy complex remains poorly documented. In this study, we report the first record of larval parasitism in D. glabrata by the tachinid fly Myiopharus ancilla (Walker).

Gene Editing of Nicotiana benthamiana Architecture for Space‐Efficient Production of Recombinant Proteins in Closed Environments

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Indoor vertical farming (VF) offers practical advantages for the cultivation of plant protein bio‐factories including plant uniformity, product consistency, water/nutrient recycling and production cycles on a year‐round basis. Much progress has been achieved toward the development of innovative systems for artificial lighting, automated ...

Disruption of Fatty Acid Desaturase Gene Alters Aphid Resistance and Volatile Emissions in Sorghum

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Jasmonic acid (JA)‐deficient msd3 sorghum mutants exhibit contrasting resistance phenotypes against sugarcane aphids (SCA; Melanaphis sacchari), which promotes aphid settling at early time points while providing antibiosis‐mediated resistance at later stages. Here we investigated the physiological, hormonal, and metabolic mechanisms underlying

Seeing Through an Ant's Eyes: Do Entomopathogenic Fungi Extend Their Cognition to Their Hosts?

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Post‐cognitivist approaches recognize cognition as a phenomenon that involves not just brains but all the sensorimotor apparatus of organisms. This means that brains are not always required for the emergence of cognition and that every organism can, in principle, be cognitive, unlocking a theoretical framework to explain the complex adaptive ...

Apocalyptic Visions and Ecofeminist Narratives in Three Southeast Asian Women's Fiction

open access: yesWorld Englishes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Apocalypse that describes ‘end‐of‐world’ scenarios have been especially prolific in the past few decades since the climate crisis has prophesied the imminent destruction of natural and human habitats. Apocalyptic literatures present insights into the various problems that beset humanity currently and extrapolate the inevitable consequences ...
