Shiny Beech Wood is Confirmed as an Indicator of Tension Wood

This study sought to develop a method to quantify tension wood areas in stem discs. It was suggested that the shiny appearance of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) could provide an indication of tension wood. Each of 21 stem discs were digitised and the images analysed.

Adhesive penetration in beech wood

A study with synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) of PUR, PVAc, and UF adhesive bond lines in beech wood, bonded under various growth ring angles, is presented. The bond line morphologies and the adhesive penetration into the wood structure were evaluated after determining the hardening characteristics of the adhesives.

The structure of beech-wood lignin : an investigation into the isolation of lignin by the direct acetylation of beech-wood meal.

The direct acetylation of a prepared beechwood meal has been carried out with a view to the separation of an acetylated lignin. The maximum solution by acetylation uas 76.7% of the lignin present in beech-wood. A separation of the acetylated lignin in high yield by preferential solvent extraction was not obtained.

Alkaline degradation of spruce and beech wood

The alkaline delignification of spruce and beech wood is accomplished in three phases. The first phase results in a decrease of yield down to 83...80%, the second one in a decrease from 83...80% to 64...61% and the third one in a yeld drop from 64...61% to 50...46%. The amount of polysaccharides removed in the first phase was 22%, in the second phase 5.
