Factors Affecting Dystocia in Beef Heifers

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1972
SUMMARY A study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of calf birth weight and dam pelvic area on the occurrence of dystocia in primiparous beef heifers. A pelvimeter was developed to measure the bovine pelvic inlet per rectum. In the 1st trial, ninety 2-year-old primiparous Hereford heifers were weighed and their pelvic areas were measured 3 months ...

Body composition of beef heifers at puberty

Theriogenology, 1985
Three trials were conducted to study age, weight, percent body fat and protein content of 131 crossbred and purebred beef heifers at puberty, to investigate relationships among various pubertal measurements and to determine if body fat and protein values could be used in combination with age, weight and shoulder height to predict the onset of puberty ...

Control of Estrus and Ovulation in Beef Heifers

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 2013
Expanded use of artificial insemination (AI) and/or adoption of emerging reproductive technologies for beef heifers and cows require precise methods of estrous-cycle control. New protocols for inducing and synchronizing a fertile estrus in replacement beef heifers and postpartum beef cows in which progestins are used provide new opportunities for beef ...

Relaxin on Induction of Parturition in Beef Heifers*

Endocrinology, 1986
Purified porcine relaxin (3000 U/mg) was administered into the cervical os of primiparous beef heifers on day 278 of gestation (approximately 5 days before parturition normally occurs) to determine its effects on the induction of parturition, changes in progesterone, estrone (E1), 17 beta-estradiol (17 beta-E2), cervical dilation, and pelvic relaxation.

Developing replacement beef heifers

Theriogenology, 2008
The replacement heifer represents the next generation of genetic progress for the cow herd. Producers invest a substantial amount of capital in these females, even if they fail to become pregnant. In order to get a return on this investment, it is imperative that these heifers become pregnant early in the first breeding season, calve with a minimum of ...

Induced Tritrichomonas foetus infection in beef heifers

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1990
Summary Four virgin beef heifers were inoculated intravaginally with 7 × 106 Tritrichomonas foetus organisms. Protozoal colonization of the vagina, cervix, and uterus developed within the first week after inoculation. Protozoa were no longer detected in secretions from these regions at approximately the same time in each heifer.
