Meta-analysis of the effects of monensin on performance of beef replacement heifers and beef cows
Abstract Although performance benefits of monensin have been extensively studied in finishing cattle, growing cattle, and dairy cows, considerably less published work is available evaluating response to monensin supplementation in cow-calf production systems.

Human–Animal Comparisons: Supporting and Criticizing Female Subjugation in Renaissance Italy
ABSTRACT Studying gender history through an animal history lens, or vice versa, simultaneously increases our knowledge of ideas about gender and human–animal relations. This approach has particular merit for the Renaissance period, as it witnessed an upsurge in discourse about both the human–animal divide and the distinction between men and women.

Safe and Stable Germline Transmission of MSTN Mutations in Cattle
ABSTRACT With the global population expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, sustainable livestock production is critical. Gene editing of the myostatin (MSTN) gene represents a promising strategy to enhance muscle growth in cattle. In this study, MSTN‐mutated founder (F0) cows were used to generate F1 offspring via ovum pick‐up, in vitro fertilization ...

Dung beetles suppressed cumulative methane flux from cattle dung by 85% and reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 18%. Beetle activity accelerated initial CO2 release but did not alter total cumulative flux. N2O and NH3 fluxes were transient and not consistently driven by beetle presence.

Ethanolamine plasmalogens increased LH pulse frequency. GPR61 was expressed in GnRH neurons and gonadotrophs, suggesting a role in neuroendocrine regulation. Ethanolamine plasmalogens (EPls), but not choline plasmalogens (CPls), may act via GPR61 expressed in GnRH neurons in the preoptic area and in anterior pituitary gonadotrophs.

Abstract Background In horses, cats and dogs, the opioid butorphanol has been proven effective in management of visceral pain and for peri‐ and postoperative pain relief. The aim of this study was to evaluate physiological responses and indicators of noxious stimuli when adding butorphanol to xylazine for sedation of bull calves during surgical ...

Abstract Background Updated targets for measuring transfer of passive immunity (TPI) at the herd level have been suggested, but the current performance of dairy herds in Great Britain is unknown. Methods A cross‐sectional study was performed. Serum total protein (STP) data collected between October 2022 and October 2023 by 21 veterinary practices were ...

Live animal measurements, carcass composition and plasma hormone and metabolite concentrations in male progeny of sires differing in genetic merit for beef production [PDF]
peer-reviewedIn genetic improvement programmes for beef cattle, the effect of selecting for a given trait or index on other economically important traits, or their predictors, must be quantified to ensure no deleterious consequential effects go unnoticed.

Nutrient data from US manure systems from 2012 to 2022: Spatial and temporal trends
Abstract Most published manure nutrient concentration approximations (book values) used today were derived from manure data prior to 2003 and do not reflect potential differences across US regions. Using ManureDB data, the University of Minnesota database with manure total nitrogen (N), ammonium‐N (NH4‐N), phosphorus (P2O5), and potassium (K2O) data ...
