Protection status and environmental gradients shape butterfly assemblages in an East African tropical ecosystem

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Observed butterfly richness was highest in moderately protected areas. During the dry season, vegetation productivity increased butterfly richness while human population density reduced it. Moderately protected areas supported high butterfly abundance and a high proportion of host‐specialist species.

Eight Years of Citizen Science Reveal Taxonomic Confusion Patterns and Dynamic Participation in the Monitoring of Vespa velutina in Spain

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The yellow‐legged hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax) is a successful invasive species in Europe, where its monitoring is partially reliant on citizen science (CS) initiatives. While CS is a powerful tool for early detection, taxonomic confusion and fluctuating participant engagement can limit its effectiveness.

Honey Bee Pollination of Camellia oleifera and Mitigation of Toxic Crop Nectar

open access: yesInsects
Tea oil tree (Camellia oleifera), a woody oil crop native to Southern China, relies on insect pollination for fruit and seed production. However, its nectar is toxic to honey bees (Apis spp.) due to their inability to digest the oligosaccharide present ...

Relationship between the environment and the occurrence of invasive pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus in lotic and lentic habitats

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus is a freshwater fish species native to North America. It has been introduced to Europe, where it is recognized as one of the worst aquatic invaders due to its high adaptability and invasive potential. This study aimed to determine the presence of L. gibbosus in small to medium‐sized water bodies, both lotic and

The Standardization of the Honeybee Colonies Evaluation Methodology, with Application in Honeybee Breeding Programs, in Romanian Conditions

open access: yesScientific Papers Animal Science and Biotechnologies, 2023
It is well known that breeding is based on phenotypic and behavioural performance assessed at the level of each honeybee colony. By selection, the genes responsible for the desired characters have to be favoured, by evaluation and classification of all ...

Thermogenesis‐derived spatiotemporal microclimates guide pollinator movement to ensure pollination

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
Alocasia odora's microclimatic heterogeneity guides Colocasiomyia fly movement within its inflorescence. During the female stage, midday heat in the upper spadix pushes flies down to the cooler female zone. During the male stage, nocturnal warmth in the upper part pulls flies upward and spathe constriction closes the lower female chamber.

Testing in Vitro of an Apifitoterapeutic Formula Against Nosema spp.

open access: yesScientific Papers Animal Science and Biotechnologies, 2023
Nosema, a parasitic disease that affects adult honey bees, has a directly correlation with the losses of bee colonies, until to depopulation. The target of our study was to determine the antinosema action of an apifitoterapeutic formula that was obtained
