Understanding the Chemical and Electronic Properties of Sub‐Monolayer TiO2 on High Surface Area Silica for Jet Fuel Synthesis Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Sub‐monolayer titania grafted onto mesoporous silica enables solvent‐free photocatalytic upgrading of furfural and cyclopentanone into jet fuel precursors. Advanced spectroscopic methods reveal tunable surface speciation, acidity, and bandgaps, enhancing catalytic efficiency.

Metabolism gene expression in worker honey bees after exposure to 50Hz electric field - semi-field analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Zoology
The investigation of the effects of artificial 50 Hz electric field (E-field) frequency on Apis mellifera is a relatively new field of research. Since the current literature focuses mainly on short-term effects, it is unknown whether E-fields have ...

Single‐Step Conversion of Metal Impurities in CNTs to Electroactive Metallic Nitride Nanoclusters for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A single‐step, low‐temperature co‐pyrolysis process removes encapsulated seed metal NPs (10–50 nm) from CNTs, redistributing them as surface‐anchored metal and metal–nitride NCs (1–1.5 nm). Herein, Ni3N NCs achieve an ultra‐low onset overpotential for CO2 reduction to CO with >98% Faradaic efficiency across 100–700 mA cm−2.

Colonial Ascidian Populations at Inshore Coral Reefs of Norfolk Island, South Pacific

open access: yesDiversity
Subtropical coral reefs such as the lagoonal reefs of Norfolk Island in the remote South Pacific are vastly understudied, with many benthic species unrecorded in the scientific literature.

The diversity and floral hosts of bees at the Archbold Biological Station, Florida (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
A list is provided of 113 species of bees and their 157 known floral hosts at the Archbold Biological Station(ABS), a 2105 ha site on the Lake Wales Ridge in Highlands County in south-central Florida.

Built‐In Electric Field in 2D/2D LDH/Antimonene Heterostructure to Induce Stable β‐NiOOH at Ultralow Potential for Cost‐Effective Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this paper, a built‐in electric field (BEF) strategy is proposed to fabricate NiFe‐LDH/antimonene heterostructure as bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The formed BEF generates a local potential that reduces the potential for the formation of β‐NiOOH, thereby enabling ultra‐low ...

Non-cultivated plants present a season-long route of pesticide exposure for honey bees

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Recent efforts to evaluate the contribution of neonicotinoid insecticides to worldwide pollinator declines have focused on honey bees and the chronic levels of exposure experienced when foraging on crops grown from neonicotinoid-treated seeds.

The Sting of the Bee [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1879
IN “The Origin of Species,” p. 242, fourth edition, Mr. Darwin says, “If we look at the sting of the bee as having originally existed in a remote progenitor as a boring and serrated instrument, like that in so many members of the same great order, and which has been modified, but not perfected, for its present purpose, with the poison, originally ...
