There is weaker surface‐sensible heating on HDs and HWs. A nocturnal jet advects warm air on HDs and HWs. There is a strong and slow‐moving upper‐level anticyclone on HWs.

A new scale‐selective measure of curvature for meteorological fields
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.We introduce a novel diagnostic called curvature using radial variation (CURV) that quantifies the local cyclonic or anticyclonic curvature of mean‐sea‐level pressure or geopotential height gridded fields over selected scales. A depiction of how CURV values relate to differing cyclonic curvature is shown in the figure.
