A virtual model of the bench press exercise

Journal of Biomechanics, 2009
The objective of this study was to design and validate a three degrees of freedom model in the sagittal plane for the bench press exercise. The mechanical model was based on rigid segments connected by revolute and prismatic pairs, which enabled a kinematic approach and global force estimation.

A Modified YMCA Bench Press Test as a Predictor of 1 Repetition Maximum Bench Press Strength

Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2002
This study evaluated the influence of cadence on the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) bench press test for predicting 1 repetition maximum (1RM) bench press test performance. Fifty-eight medical students (37 men, 21 women) were evaluated for anthropometric variables (age, height, weight, fat-free mass, and percent fat), 1RM bench press, and 2 ...

A Kinetic and Electromyographic Comparison of the Standing Cable Press and Bench Press

The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2007
This study compared the standing cable press (SCP) and the traditional bench press (BP) to better understand the biomechanical limitations of pushing from a standing position together with the activation amplitudes of trunk and shoulder muscles. A static biomechanical model (4D Watbak) was used to assess the forces that can be pushed with 2 arms in a ...

VERBAL MESSAGES STRENGTHEN BENCH PRESS EFFICACY

Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2004
This study examined the effects of verbal messages on bench press efficacy: the confidence to lift progressively heavier weights for 1 repetition. Thirty-two women who had not bench pressed within the previous 18 months were assigned to 1 of 2 groups and exposed to 2 sources of efficacy information.

The Close-Grip Bench Press

Strength & Conditioning Journal, 2017
ABSTRACT THE CLOSE-GRIP BENCH PRESS HAS RECEIVED LIMITED ANALYSIS IN THE PROFESSIONAL LITERATURE. THEREFORE, THIS ARTICLE WILL REVIEW THE EXISTING LITERATURE THAT DOCUMENTS THE TECHNIQUE, MUSCLE ACTIVATION CHANGES THAT OCCUR WHEN PERFORMING THIS EXERCISE, AND THE RESULTING IMPLICATIONS.

A Comparison of Force Curve Profiles Between the Bench Press and Ballistic Bench Throws

Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2008
The purpose of this study was to compare the peak force and force curve characteristics during a traditional bench press (BP) and a ballistic bench throw (BT). Eight (age = 21.0 +/- 2.3 years, height = 182.3 +/- 7.4 cm, body mass = 85.9 +/- 5.5 kg) semi-professional rugby league players with resistance and power training experience performed both BP ...

A biomechanical analysis of the sticking region in the bench press

Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 1989
The performance of ten elite powerlifters were analyzed in a simulated competition environment using three-dimensional cinematography and surface electromyography while bench pressing approximately 80% of maximum, a maximal load, and an unsuccessful supramaximal attempt.

Effects of Different Vibration Exercises on Bench Press

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 2011
This study was undertaken to analyze the effects of different vibration recovery strategies via feet or hands on the number of repetitions performed and on mean velocity, peak velocity and blood lactate concentration during consecutive bench-press sets.

Velocity- and Power-Load Relationships of the Bench Pull vs. Bench Press Exercises

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 2013
This study compared the velocity- and power-load relationships of the antagonistic upper-body exercises of prone bench pull (PBP) and bench press (BP). 75 resistance-trained athletes performed a progressive loading test in each exercise up to the one-repetition maximum (1RM) in random order.
