Image quality comparisons of coil setups in 3T MRI for brain and head and neck radiotherapy simulations

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, Volume 23, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Purpose MRI is increasingly used for brain and head and neck radiotherapy treatment planning due to its superior soft tissue contrast. Flexible array coils can be arranged to encompass treatment immobilization devices, which do not fit in diagnostic head/neck coils. Selecting a flexible coil arrangement to replace a diagnostic coil should rely

Treatment planning with a 2.5 MV photon beam for radiation therapy

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, Volume 23, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Purpose The shallow depth of maximum dose and higher dose fall‐off gradient of a 2.5 MV beam along the central axis that is available for imaging on linear accelerators is investigated for treatment of shallow tumors and sparing the organs at risk (OARs) beyond it.

Performance analysis of control allocation using data‐driven integral quadratic constraints

open access: yesAdvanced Control for Applications, Volume 4, Issue 4, December 2022., 2022
Abstract A new method is presented for evaluating the performance of a nonlinear control allocation system within a linear control loop. To that end, a worst‐case gain analysis problem is formulated that can be readily solved by means of well‐established methods from robustness analysis using integral quadratic constraints (IQCs).

Bending the Curve of Global Freshwater Biodiversity Loss: An Emergency Recovery Plan

open access: yesBioScience, 2020
Despite their limited spatial extent, freshwater ecosystems host remarkable biodiversity, including one-third of all vertebrate species. This biodiversity is declining dramatically: Globally, wetlands are vanishing three times faster than forests, and ...

Digital Light Processing of 2D Lattice Composites for Tunable Self‐Sensing and Mechanical Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView., 2023
The study presents the mechanical and in situ sensing performance of digital light processing‐enabled 2D lattice nanocomposites under monotonic tensile and repeated cyclic loading, and provides guidelines for the design of architectures suitable for strain sensors and smart lightweight structures.

Numerical wear study of metal‐on‐ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene‐based cervical total disc arthroplasty by coupling finite element analysis and multi‐body dynamics

open access: yesBiosurface and Biotribology, 2021
In this study, the effects of in vivo (head flexion‐extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation) and in vitro (ISO 18192‐1) working conditions on the wear of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHWMPE)‐based cervical disc prosthesis were studied ...

Bending of sparklers [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Physics, 2014
A new equation is proposed to explain the curvature of spent sparklers. We found the state of a segment of the sparkler to depend strongly on the state of its spent segments. The equation is nearly able to produce the sparkler shape for a range of lengths and for all elevation angles.

Creep Characterization of Inconel 718 Lattice Metamaterials Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView., 2023
Herein, the creep characteristics of additively manufactured Inconel 718 metamaterials are investigated. The creep behavior of metamaterials and the effects of microstructural defects are assessed, and the microstructure defects are accurately captured using Kachanov's creep damage model.
