Thermal contraction in silicon nanowires at low temperatures

open access: yes, 2010
The thermal expansion effect of silicon nanowires (SiNW) in [100], [110] and [111] directions with different sizes is theoretically investigated. At low temperatures, all SiNW studied exhibit thermal contraction effect due to the lowest energy of the ...

Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Bending stiffness evaluation of Teca and Guajará lumber through tests of transverse and longitudinal vibration - doi: 10.4025/actascitechnol.v34i1.10728

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Technology, 2011
The grading of structural lumber besides contributing for increasing the structure's safety, due to the reduction of the material variability, also allows its rational use.

Strategies for using cellular automata to locate constrained layer damping on vibrating structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
It is often hard to optimise constrained layer damping (CLD) for structures more complicated than simple beams and plates as its performance depends on its location, the shape of the applied patch, the mode shapes of the structure and the material ...

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

A generalised approach to torsionality maximisation in longitudinal-torsional ultrasonic devices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A longitudinal-torsional vibration mode has many applications in ultrasonic systems. Obtaining this behaviour could be achieved either by coupling the longitudinal and torsional modes or by degenerating the longitudinal mode, but the results may be ...

On the Bending and Vibration of Rectangular Plates

open access: yesJournal of Zosen Kiokai, 1932
The problem of the bending of a rectangular plate 2a×2b×2h clamped at its four edges (or clamped at the two opposite edges and supported at the other) and loaded with a uniformly distributed pressure is solved from the differential equation, assuming the deflection to bew=∞Σm=1∞Σn=1Amncosmπx/2acosnπy/2b+ (1-x2/a2) ∞Σn=1Bncosnπy/2b+ (1-y2/b2) ∞Σm ...

Direct Metal Deposition of Graphene–Ti28Nb35.4Zr Matrix Composites With Enhanced Mechanical, Corrosion, and Biocompatibility Properties for Bone Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene nanoplatelet (0.1 wt.%) reinforcement significantly enhances the performance of β Ti‐28Nb‐35.4Zr alloy. Grain refinement, reduced water contact angle, and improved surface characteristics promote osteoblast adhesion and complete surface coverage after 7 days.

Testing the Effectiveness of the Anti-Bending Bar System to Reduce the Vertical Bending Vibrations of the Railway Vehicle Carbody Using an Experimental Scale Demonstrator

open access: yesApplied Sciences
In this paper, the vertical vibration behaviour of an experimental scale demonstrator of a railway vehicle carbody fitted with an anti-bending bar system of innovative design is studied to highlight its ability to raise the bending natural frequency of ...
