Prevalence of Parasites in Fish from The Pelagic and Benthic Zones
Malaysian Applied Biology, 2023The present research is a comparative study on the prevalence of parasites in marine finfish among the two major marine zones; namely the pelagic zone and benthic zone. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the parasite prevalence in both zones, as well as to determine the effect of differing marine zones regarding the presence of ...

Density of benthic macroalgae in the intertidal zone varies with surf zone hydrodynamics
Phycologia, 2019Surf zone hydrodynamics influence subsidies (larval settlers and phytoplankton food) to the intertidal zone; subsidies have been observed to be much higher at more dissipative shores compared to re...

The ecosystem of the benthos, which is situated on the continental shelf, slope and abyssal plains, consists of bottom sediments, zoobenthos, bottom fish fauna, bottom waters and porewater in sediments. The process of accumulation of suspended and dissolved radionuclides on the shelf, continental slope and further on the Ocean bottom is determined by

Two apparatuses for sampling benthic fauna in surf zones
Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 1985Abstract A suction corer which has been used in the turbulent surf zone is described as well as a scoop dredge which proved effective in shallow water and on dry beaches. The former is also effective under calm conditions in water ranging from a few centimetres to depths in excess of 20 m.

The relative roles of multiple drivers on benthic ciliate communities in an intertidal zone
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2023Intertidal biodiversity is being severely disrupted as a result of increased anthropogenic activity. However, our knowledge about how natural gradients, human induced disturbance and biotic interactions affect biodiversity is limited. So, we investigated how three facets of alpha diversity and community composition of benthic ciliates responded to ...

Contrasting habitats but comparable microbial decomposition in the benthic and hyporheic zone
Science of The Total Environment, 2017Input of allochthonous leaf litter is the main carbon source for heterotrophic metabolism in low-order forested streams. A major part of this leaf litter is accumulated at benthic retention structures or buried in the hyporheic zone. As a result of hyporheic sediment characteristics, hyporheic physicochemistry differs from that of the benthic zone ...

Ecology of benthic foraminifers in the littoral zone of Iturup Island
Oceanology, 2006The composition and abundance of present-day benthic foraminifers in the littoral zone of Iturup Island are examined. The littoral zone is surveyed on the sides of both the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean. The greatest species diversity and the maximum foraminifer abundance were observed on the bench and at the sites of attachment of seaweeds and ...

Production of Benthic Microalgae in the Littoral Zone of a Eutrophic Lake
Oikos, 1971Primary production by benthic microalgae of the sandy littoral zone in a Danish eutrophic lake, Fures0, was measured by means of the 14C method. Annual potential gross production was calculated as 297 g C m-2, with highest values in July (2,200 mg C m-2 day-'). Annual true gross production was estimated to be 143 g C m-2.

Bathyal zone benthic foraminiferal genera off Northeast Newfoundland
The Journal of Foraminiferal Research, 1981About 35% of the bathyal zone foraminiferal genera observed on the north east Newfoundland slope and rise, whether arenaceous (43 genera) or calcareous (63) have an average absolute abundance per genus of greater than one specimen per cubic cm of wet sediment.
