Benzo[a]pyrene-collagen interactions

Chemico-Biological Interactions, 1983
In vitro interactions of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) with acid-soluble type I collagen from rat tail tendon have been investigated. The fluorescence of BaP increases in the presence of collagen. Bound BaP inhibits the formation of collagen fibrils in solution.

Ionization energies of benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[e]pyrene

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1997
Photoelectron spectra of benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[e]pyrene have been assigned on the basis of ab initio electron propagator theory. Electron correlation effects are included in the partial third order approximation and agreement with experimental peaks is very close.

Benzo[a]pyrene antibody inhibition of benzo[a]pyrene-induced mutagenesis

Cancer Letters, 1979
Summary An antibody to benzo[ a ]pyrene (BP) was prepared. The isolated antibody showed a specificity for BP and a low reactivity with another carcinogenic hydrocarbon, 7,12-dimethylbenz[ a ] anthracene (DMBA). The BP-antibody inhibited the in vitro cytotoxic and mutagenic activity of BP in both a rat embryo fibroblast- and a rat lung cell-mediated ...

Metabolism of benzo[a]pyrene VI. Stereoselective metabolism of benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene 7,8-dihydrodiol to diol epoxides

Chemico-Biological Interactions, 1977
Abstract (±)-7β,8α-Dihydroxy-9β,10β-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]pyrene (diol epoxide-1) and (±)-7β,8α-dihydroxy-9α,10α-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]pyrene (diol epoxide-2) are highly mutagenic diol epoxide diastereomers that are formed during metabolism of the carcinogen (±)-trans-7,8-dihydroxy-7,8-dihydrobenzo[a]pyrene.

Risk assessment for benzo[a]pyrene

Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, 1991
Benzo[a]pyrene is the most studied carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and one of the most potent, and it is often used as a toxicological prototype or surrogate for all carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Quantitative risk assessment of benzo[a]pyrene has been hampered by the quality of the data sets available for quantitation. The

Excretion of benzo[a]pyrene-Gua adduct in the urine of benzo[a]pyrene-treated rats

Chemico-Biological Interactions, 1986
A benzo[a]pyrene(BP)-Gua adduct was extracted in the urine of rats treated with BP. Some (0.15%) of the administered dose of BP was excreted as BP-Gua within 48 h. A double labelling experiment demonstrated that the excreted product contained both a BP and a Gua moiety.

Microspectrofluorometric study of Benzo(a)pyrene metabolization in Benzo(a)pyrene-grown single living cells

Histochemistry, 1974
A microspectrofluorometric approach in conjunction with microelectrophoretic injection of glucose-6-P (G6P), was used to study the effect of cultivation in a benzo(a)pyrene (BP)-containing medium on the metabolization of BP, by EL2 ascites cells. The fluorescence increase which follows the microinjection of G6P to single living cells.

Benzo[a]pyrene 7,8-dihydrodiol is more carcinogenic than benzo[a]pyrene in newborn mice

Nature, 1977
THE pioneering research by James and Elizabeth Miller relating the carcinogenic effects of many chemicals to the metabolism of these compounds to reactive intermediates which bind to critical cellular compoenents1,2 led to studies of the nature and chemical structure of these reactive metabolites (ultimate carcinogens) and their metabolic precursors ...

Metabolism of Benzo(a)Pyrene and Benzo(a)Pyrene 4,5-Oxide in Rabbit Lung

1982
For several years our laboratory has been investigating the biotransformation of various environmental pollutants by lung. Studies have been performed with pulmonary subcellular fractions, purified monooxygenase and glutathione transferase enzymes, and preparations having intact cellular structure including the isolated perfused lung and cell fractions

Fifty years of benzo(a)pyrene

Nature, 1983
It is fifty years since the publication of the report on the isolation, from coal tar, and identification of the potent chemical carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene, the culmination of over 10 years of research instigated and directed by E.L. Kennaway. The events leading to that discovery are of interest in themselves.
