Benzyl isothiocyanate in the caricaceae
Phytochemistry, 1972Abstract GLC quantitation of benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) in 1–2 macerated seeds of Caricaceae is described. In Carica and Jarilla genera, the content of this compound ranges from 1·37 to 1·96%. In seeds of Jacaratia , however, only 2–4 ppm of BITC was found.

Inactivation of Cytochrome P450 2E1 by Benzyl Isothiocyanate
Chemical Research in Toxicology, 1999The cytochrome P450 enzymes constitute a family of phase I enzymes that play a prominent role in the metabolism of a great variety of endogenous and xenobiotic compounds. In this study, the kinetics for the inactivation of cytochrome P450 2E1 by benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) were elucidated.

Benzyl isothiocyanate of papaya fruit
Phytochemistry, 1971Abstract The amounts of benzyl isothiocyanate in macerated papaya fruit pulp and seeds were determined by GLC. The concentration of benzyl isothiocyanate decreased in the pulp but increased in the seeds as maturity of the fruit progressed. Free benzyl isothiocyanate was detected in both the wax layer and the vapor which emanated from intact green ...

Subacute oral toxicity study of benzyl isothiocyanate in rats
Food / Nahrung, 1992AbstractThe subacute toxicity of benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) was investigated in male rats given oral doses of 0, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight/day for 4 weeks. Body weight gain and food consumption were decreased with increasing doses of BITC. Haematological changes of toxicological relevance were observed in the highest dose group.

Physicochemical and Enzymatic Properties of Benzyl Isothiocyanate Derivatized Proteinases
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1998This paper deals with interactions of benzyl isothiocyanate (benzyl-ITC) with cysteine proteases (bromelain and papain) as well as with serine proteases (trypsin and α-chymotrypsin).

Glutathione- and cysteine-mediated cytotoxicity of allyl and benzyl isothiocyanate
Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, 1986Ally isothiocyanate has been reported to be a bladder carcinogen in male rats. On the other hand, benzyl isothiocyanate is an anti-carcinogen. These contradicting properties led us to investigate the cytotoxicity of these compounds in RL-4 rat hepatocytes.

Inhibition of the general soil microbial community by allyl-isothiocyanate and benzyl-isothiocyanate
BIOS, 2015Abstract. Invasion of Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard) has become increasingly problematic, as it has disrupted the native ecosystem of the forest understory throughout most of the United States. A key element of garlic mustard invasion is the production of two compounds that have been shown to be inhibitory at relatively low concentrations, allyl ...

Benzyl isothiocyanate: maximising production in papaya tissue extracts
Acta Horticulturae, 2015Abstract: Although mainly grown for its sweet flavoured fruit, papaya (Carica papaya) has also been used for pharmacological purposes for many years. The reasons for use are varied with one of the best known being its anti-fungal action. Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) is the constituent most often implicated in this activity. Isothiocyanates are formed

Abstract 826: Benzyl isothiocyanate inhibits breast cancer-induced osteoclastogenesis
Cancer Research, 2016Abstract Breast cancer is a major public health issue for women worldwide and 70% of the disease preferentially metastasizes to bone resulting in its destruction. Advanced breast cancer releases osteoclastogenic factors to promote bone resorption. As bone metastasis with breast cancer is associated with high mortality, osteoclastogenesis

Decline in Phytotoxicity of Benzyl Isothiocyanate Formulated as Granules
Weed Science, 1986Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) was formulated in dry granules with tung oil and calcareous loess to facilitate safe handling of the water-sensitive lachrymator. Crop and weed seeds were exposed to granular BITC at 40 mg ai/kg (w/w) substrate on moist sand for 2 days.
