Antispasmodic Activity of Benzylisoquinoline Alkaloids Analogous to Papaverine

Planta Medica, 1993
In vitro, reticuline, norarmepavine, coclaurine, and papaverine competitively antagonize the uterine muscular contractions induced by acetylcholine and calcium. The antagonism is more efficient for the alkaloid coclaurine which is even stronger than papaverine.

Evolutionary and cellular webs in benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis

Current Opinion in Biotechnology, 2008
Alkaloids are a group of approximately 12,000 low molecular weight and nitrogenous secondary metabolites found in 20% of plant species. Their potent biological activity suggests that alkaloids function as defense compounds. Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) are derived from tyrosine and are diversified by an intricate biochemical network of ...

Nomenclature of benzylisoquinoline and related alkaloids

Chemistry of Natural Compounds, 1981
A classification of the bisbenzylisoquinoline, benzylisoquinoline, and related alkaloids is proposed which is based on the biogenetic characteristics of these alkaloids.

An Overview on Benzylisoquinoline Derivatives with Dopaminergic and Serotonergic Activities

Current Medicinal Chemistry, 2009
Dopamine and serotonin are important neurotransmitters in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) involved in numerous physiological and behavioural disorders such as schizophrenia, major depression, anxiety, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Inhibition of nonenzymic lipid peroxidation by benzylisoquinoline alkaloids

Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 1992
A group of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, including five simple benzylisoquinolines, three phtalideisoquinolines, six aporphines, three protoberberines, and two benzophenanthridines, have been studied as inhibitors of lipid peroxidation stimulated by Fe2+/cysteine in rat liver microsomal fractions.

Benzylisoquinoline Alkaloids from Anisocycla jollyana Leaves

Journal of Natural Products, 1995
A new bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid, (+)-limacusine-2'-β-N-oxide [1], was isolated from the leaves of Anisocycla jollyana, along with nine known alkaloids : (-)-2'-norlimacine, (-)-2-norlimacine, (-)-limacine, (-)-limacine-2'-β-N-oxide, (+)-homoaromaline, (+)-trilobine, (+)-isotrilobine, (+)-dehydro-1,2-telobine, and (+)-remrefidine.

Secondary Plant Substances · Benzylisoquinoline Alkaloids

1989
Within the class of alkaloids, the isoquinoline alkaloids are of particular interest, due to their enormous potential chemical variations of the basic precursor molecules and on the other hand because it comprises some of the most important drugs for therapy and euphoria (e.g., morphine and its chemical derivatives, papaverine, berberine dimeric ...

[Enzymology of production of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids].

Ceska a Slovenska farmacie : casopis Ceske farmaceuticke spolecnosti a Slovenske farmaceuticke spolecnosti, 2005
This review paper summarizes the current knowledge of enzymes participating in the production of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids. This group of alkaloids comprises, e.g., morphine, codeine, thebaine, and sanginarine, which have an irreplaceable position in pharmaceutical practice. For the time being, chemists have not managed to prepare them synthetically

Enzymology of Benzylisoquinoline Alkaloid Formation

1985
The largest group of naturally occurring alkaloids comprises compounds based on the tetrahydroisoquinoline nucleus. A multitude of structural types derived from this nucleus is found in the plant kingdom (Shamma 1972, Shamma and Moniot 1978). A great number of biosynthetic hypotheses based on in vivo investigations has been proposed to explain this ...
