Stable Simulation of the Community Atmosphere Model Using Machine‐Learning Physical Parameterization Trained With Experience Replay

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract In recent years, machine learning (ML) models have been used to improve physical parameterizations of general circulation models (GCMs). A significant challenge of integrating ML models into GCMs is the online instability when they are coupled for long‐term simulation.

Deep Learning Advances Arctic River Water Temperature Predictions

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 61, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract The accelerated warming in the Arctic poses serious risks to freshwater ecosystems by altering streamflow and river thermal regimes. However, limited research on Arctic River water temperatures exists due to data scarcity and the absence of robust methodologies, which often focus on large, major river basins.

Integrated Seismic Refraction, Reflection, and Rayleigh Wave Imaging at Kilbourne Hole, New Mexico: Implications for Lunar Subsurface Exploration

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract Maars are volcanoes with a central crater surrounded by an ejecta ring formed through surface explosive processes from underlying magma interacting with fluids. The study of terrestrial maar volcanoes, as analogs to explosive volcanic vents on the Moon and other planets, can improve our understanding of planetary volcanism and evolution.

Ultrafine‐Resolution Urban Climate Modeling: Resolving Processes Across Scales

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract Recent advances in urban climate modeling resolution have improved the representation of complex urban environments, with large‐eddy simulation (LES) as a key approach, capturing not only building effects but also urban vegetation and other critical urban processes.

Growth–Mortality Coordination Differs Among Xerophytic Versus Mesophytic Tree Species During Severe Drought

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 6, June 2025.
In the eastern United States, water‐demanding “mesophytic” trees are replacing “xerophytic” oaks and hickories. In this article, we evaluated the terrestrial carbon consequences of this ongoing compositional shift by quantifying relative drought‐driven growth and mortality responses between co‐located trees.
