Summer Chukchi Sea Near-Surface Salinity Variability in Satellite Observations and Ocean Models

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The Chukchi Sea is an open estuary in the southwestern Arctic. Its near-surface salinities are higher than those of the surrounding open Arctic waters due to the key inflow of saltier and warmer Pacific waters through the Bering Strait.

CURRENTS NORTH OF BERING STRAIT IN WINTER1 [PDF]

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, 1970
Four days of current record were obtained about 190 km NNE of Bering Strait during March 1968. The mean current was the same for the location as in summer, suggesting that the generally north flow from the Bering Sea to the Arctic Ocean occurs also in winter.Variations in speed and direction of the flow were identified and analyzed.

Comparing the impacts of Miocene–Pliocene changes in inter-ocean gateways on climate: Central American Seaway, Bering Strait, and Indonesia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Changes in inter-ocean gateways caused by tectonic processes have been long considered an important factor in climate evolution on geological timescales.

Mechanisms Driving the Interannual Variability of the Bering Strait Throughflow

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2020
The Bering Strait throughflow has important implications for the Arctic freshwater, heat, and nutrients. By keeping the interannual variabilities of the atmospheric forcing only inside or outside the Arctic Ocean in numerical simulations, we can quantify

Mapping Indigeneity in the RGS‐IBG map collections

open access: yesArea, EarlyView.
Short Abstract This article summarises and reflects on the ‘Mapping Indigeneity’ Map Room Conversation that formed part of the RGS‐IBG Annual International Conference 2024. Firstly, the maps from the RGS‐IBG collections displayed during the Conversation are presented and their relevance explained. Secondly, the authors offer a summary of the key points/

Capelin Size, Condition, and Abundance Through Multiple Heatwaves in Alaska

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Capelin (Mallotus spp.) are pelagic forage fishes that can be especially abundant in sub‐arctic marine ecosystems and are important prey for upper trophic‐level consumers. Abundance and distribution of capelin have been linked to ocean temperature, but the magnitude and directionality of thermal sensitivity can vary regionally.

Basin‐Wide Shift in Bowhead Whale Migration in the Pacific Arctic

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
In a rapidly changing Arctic, multiple lines of evidence suggest that bowhead whale migration is changing. To explore these changes further, we used passive acoustic data to examine bowhead whale presence in the western Beaufort Sea (12 years) and ...

Polar cod Boreogadus saida occurrence is driven by temperature at the margin of its distribution

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract With a warming Arctic, suitable habitat for polar cod Boreogadus saida (Lepechin 1774) is predicted to decrease. We investigated the changes in distribution of polar cod on the southern limit of its distribution in the Atlantic Ocean (around Iceland) during both autumn and spring after a recent period of warming in the area.
