30-day postoperative mortality and the effects of hospital preparedness during the COVID-19 pandemic: a pooled analysis of prospective international cohort studiesResearch in context

open access: yesThe Lancet Regional Health. Europe
Summary: Background: Surgical services were poorly prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to widescale disruption to elective activity. This study aimed to identify actionable priorities to strengthen pandemic preparedness of surgical and hospital ...

Upper Bounds on Lepton-number Violating Processes

open access: yes, 2005
We consider four lepton-number violating (\lv) processes: (a) neutrinoless double-beta decay (0\nu\beta\beta), (b) Delta L = 2 tau decays, (c) Delta L = 2 rare meson decays and (d) nuclear muon-positron conversion.

Accessibility, Car Dependence and Rural Peripheralization: The Automobility Gap in the Spanish Countryside

open access: yesSociologia Ruralis, Volume 65, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT Disparities in access to opportunities and services often accumulate in peripheral rural areas, contributing to a sense of being left out of prosperity. To bridge this gap, regular commuting to cities where jobs and resources are concentrated has partly replaced emigration, making the private car the key to settling and living in the ...

Simple Mathematical Model Of Pathologic Microsatellite Expansions: When Self-Reparation Does Not Work

open access: yes, 2007
We propose a simple model of pathologic microsatellite expansion, and describe an inherent self-repairing mechanism working against expansion. We prove that if the probabilities of elementary expansions and contractions are equal, microsatellite ...

Government subsidies and income smoothing

open access: yesContemporary Accounting Research, Volume 41, Issue 3, Page 1477-1512, Fall 2024.
Abstract This study examines the relationship between government subsidies and income smoothing using a sample of US‐listed firms. We find that subsidized firms smooth their earnings more aggressively than their unsubsidized peers. This finding is consistent with the reasoning that subsidized firms bear higher political costs and have more incentives ...

Repeated sprint training in hypoxia induces specific skeletal muscle adaptations through S100A protein signaling

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 38, Issue 8, 30 April 2024.
Repeated sprint training in normoxia and hypoxia increased exercise performance and affected skeletal muscle metabolism. The levels of proteins involved in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway were decreased, while proteins involved in the glycolytic pathway were upregulated after both training modalities.

Implications of the Top Quark Mass Measurement for the CKM Parameters, $x_s$ and CP Asymmetries [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Motivated by the recent determination of the top quark mass by the CDF collaboration, $\mt =174 \pm 10 ^{+13}_{-12}$ GeV, we review and update the constraints on the parameters of the quark flavour mixing matrix $V_{CKM}$ in the standard model.

Counterfactual Causality from First Principles?

open access: yes, 2017
In this position paper we discuss three main shortcomings of existing approaches to counterfactual causality from the computer science perspective, and sketch lines of work to try and overcome these issues: (1) causality definitions should be driven by a
