Effects of peripartum biotin supplementation of dairy cows on milk production and milk composition with emphasis on fatty acids profile [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Forty Holstein dairy cows receiving a 38% concentrate diet based on maize silage were assigned to either a control group, either a biotin group, receiving 20 mg of biotin per day from 15 days before expected calving date and for 120 days after calving ...

Ketone body kinetics in humans: the effects of insulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, and starvation.

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1984
The kinetics of acetoacetate (A) and beta-hydroxybutyrate (B) have been studied following the injection as a pulse or continued infusion of [3-14C]acetoacetate (A*) or [14C]beta-hydroxybutyrate (B*) into six newly diagnosed, untreated, ketotic diabetic ...

Effect of a high forage: Concentrate ratio on milk yield, blood parameters and oxidative status in lactating cows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
A feeding strategy that requires a forage: concentrate ratio equal to 70: 30, with at least five different herbs in the forage and the use of silages prohibited, has recently been introduced in Italy.

BACE1 activity impairs neuronal glucose oxidation:rescue by beta-hydroxybutyrate and lipoic acid [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Glucose hypometabolism and impaired mitochondrial function in neurons have been suggested to play early and perhaps causative roles in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. Activity of the aspartic acid protease, beta-site amyloid precursor protein (APP)

The NADPH oxidase NOX4 regulates redox and metabolic homeostasis preventing HCC progression

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Loss of NOX4 in HCC tumor cells induces metabolic reprogramming in a Nrf2/MYC‐dependent manner to promote HCC progression. Abstract Background and Aims The NADPH oxidase NOX4 plays a tumor‐suppressor function in HCC. Silencing NOX4 confers higher proliferative and migratory capacity to HCC cells and increases their in vivo tumorigenic potential in ...

Method comparison of beta‐hydroxybutyrate point‐of‐care testing to serum in healthy children

open access: yesJIMD Reports, 2021
Ketone production is a physiological phenomenon that occurs to avoid irreversible neurological damage from hypoglycemia, thereby serving as a marker of metabolic stress.

Estudo das propriedades e biodegradabilidade de blendas de poliéster/amido submetidas ao ataque microbiano Study of the properties and biodegradability of polyester/starch blends submitted to microbial attack

open access: yesQuímica Nova, 2007
This work deals with the biodegradation of blends of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate)/starch and poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate)/starch. The blends were obtained by evaporation of the solvent in the mixture of the polymers in chloroform.

Ingestion of an exogenous ketone monoester improves the glycemic response during oral glucose tolerance test in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance: A cross‐over randomized trial

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, 2021
Aims/Introduction As a low‐carbohydrate diet and the use of sodium–glucose transporter‐2 inhibitors are both known to increase D‐beta‐hydroxybutyrate levels, the effect of these levels on glucose metabolism has attracted attention.

Nile blue A as a fluorescent stain for poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 1982
Poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate granules exhibited a strong orange fluorescence when stained with Nile blue A. Heat-fixed cells were treated with 1% Nile blue A for 10 min and were observed at an excitation wavelength of 460 nm. Glycogen and polyphosphate did not stain.
