Universal $β$-expansions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2002
Given $\beta\in(1,2)$, a $\beta$-expansion of a real $x$ is a power series in base $\beta$ with coefficients 0 and 1 whose sum equals $x$. The aim of this note is to study certain problems related to the universality and combinatorics of $\beta$-expansions. Our main result is that for any $\beta\in(1,2)$ and a.e.

Protonophore activity of short‐chain fatty acids induces their intracellular accumulation and acidification

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The protonated form of butyrate, as well as other short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs), is membrane permeable. In acidic extracellular environments, this can lead to intracellular accumulation of SCFAs and cytosolic acidification. This phenomenon will be particularly relevant in acidic environments such as the large intestine or tumor microenvironments ...

Modifications in FLAP's second cytosolic loop influence 5‐LOX interaction, inhibitor binding, and leukotriene formation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The enzyme 5‐lipoxygenase (5‐LOX) catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes (LTs) involved in inflammatory pathophysiology. After cellular stimulation, 5‐LOX translocates to the nucleus, interacting with the 5‐LOX‐activating protein (FLAP) to form LTA4 from arachidonic acid (AA).

Exact Expressions for Kullback–Leibler Divergence for Univariate Distributions

open access: yesEntropy
The Kullback–Leibler divergence (KL divergence) is a statistical measure that quantifies the difference between two probability distributions. Specifically, it assesses the amount of information that is lost when one distribution is used to approximate ...

The deformation of symplectic critical surfaces in a Kähler surface-I [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
In this paper we derive the Euler-Lagrange equation of the functional $L_\beta=\int_\Sigma\frac{1}{\cos^\beta\alpha}d\mu, ~~\beta\neq -1$ in the class of symplectic surfaces. It is $\cos^3\alpha {\bf{H}}=\beta(J(J\nabla\cos\alpha)^\top)^\bot$, which is an elliptic equation when $\beta\geq 0$. We call such a surface a $\beta$-symplectic critical surface.

Brucella NyxA and NyxB dimerization enhances effector function during infection

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Brucella abortus thrives inside cells thanks to the translocation of effector proteins that fine‐tune cellular functions. NyxA and NyxB are two effectors that destabilize the nucleolar localization of their host target, SENP3. We show that the Nyx proteins directly interact with each other and that their dimerization is essential for their function ...

On the regularity of complex multiplicative chaos [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Denote by $\mu_\beta="\exp(\beta X)"$ the Gaussian multiplicative chaos which is defined using a log-correlated Gaussian field $X$ on a domain $U\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. The case $\beta\in\mathbb{R}$ has been studied quite intensively, and then $\mu_\beta$ is a random measure on $U$.

The carboxylate “gripper” of the substrate is critical for C‐4 stereo‐inversion by UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase (UGAepi) catalyzes NAD+‐dependent interconversion of UDP‐glucuronic acid (UDP‐GlcA) and UDP‐galacturonic acid (UDP‐GalA) via C4‐oxidation, 4‐keto‐intermediate rotation, and C4‐reduction. Here, Borg et al. examined the role of the substrate's carboxylate group in the enzymic mechanism by analyzing NADH‐dependent reduction

Investigation on the response of Fagus orientalis Lipsky to some environmental variables using beta function and its comparison with Gaussian function (Case study: Kheyrud forest research station( [PDF]

open access: yesمجله جنگل ایران, 2013
The current study was done in Patom, Namkhaneh, Gorazbon, Chelir and Baharbon districts in Kheyrud forest. A stratified sampling method based on landform was used to locate 190 0.1 ha circular sample plots in beech dominated forests.
