Climate, food and humans predict communities of mammals in the United States
Abstract Aim The assembly of species into communities and ecoregions is the result of interacting factors that affect plant and animal distribution and abundance at biogeographic scales. Here, we empirically derive ecoregions for mammals to test whether human disturbance has become more important than climate and habitat resources in structuring ...

Maternal behaviors influence survival of ungulate neonates under heavy predation risk
Predators impose top‐down forces on prey populations, yet few field studies to date have been able to directly assess the influence of maternal care on ungulate offspring survival. The support we observed for the maternal dispersion hypothesis over previously widely supported hypothesized drivers of juvenile survival suggests that managers concerned ...

Patterns and rates of exonic de novo mutations in autism spectrum disorders
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are believed to have genetic and environmental origins, yet in only a modest fraction of individuals can specific causes be identified. To identify further genetic risk factors, here we assess the role of de novo mutations

Multiscale pore‐network reconstruction of a fine‐textured heterogeneous soil
Abstract Digital samples offer many opportunities to study subsurface fluid flow and contaminant transport processes. The pore size distribution of especially fine‐textured porous media often covers many orders of magnitude in the length scale, which makes accurate microCT scanning and modeling of the underlying processes difficult.

Blood‐ and muscle‐O2 storage capacity in North American diving ducks
Breath‐hold diving presents air‐breathing vertebrates with the challenge of maintaining aerobic respiration while exercising underwater. Adaptive increases in the oxygen (O2) storage capacity in the lungs, blood, or muscle tissues can enhance these reserves and greatly extend aerobic foraging time underwater.

The inadequacy of current carbon storage assessment methods for rewilding: A Knepp Estate case study
Our study at the Knepp Estate challenges existing models by revealing that scrublands in rewilded areas allocate more carbon to belowground biomass than previously understood, with a root: shoot ratio significantly higher than i‐Tree Eco model estimates.
