Using cell‐free RNA to identify B‐ and T‐cell clonality for diagnosis and monitoring of B‐ and T‐cell neoplasms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using peripheral blood for determining B‐cell or T‐cell clonality is more reliable when we use cell‐free RNA (cfRNA) because cells release blood significantly more RNA than DNA. Next‐generation sequencing (NGS) of cfRNA allows us to evaluate fragment cfRNA and evaluate clonality reliably without the need for prior determination of the specific dominant

Operational Machine Learning Post‐Processing of Short‐Range Temperature, Humidity, Wind Speed and Gust Forecasts

open access: yesMeteorological Applications
Statistical methods can be used to create bias correction models that learn from past forecast errors and reduce systematic errors in real‐time forecasts. This study presents a machine learning (ML) approach using extreme gradient‐boosted (XGBoost) trees

Assessing multivariate bias corrections of climate simulations on various impact models under climate change [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences
Atmospheric variables simulated from climate models often present biases relative to the same variables calculated by reanalysis in the past. In order to use these models to assess the impact of climate change on processes of interest, it is necessary to

Comparative assessment of crystallographic and cryo‐EM models in the Protein Data Bank

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Raw data obtained by X‐ray crystallography or cryo‐EM result in experimental maps, ultimately fitted by atomic models. Although the physical principles are different, the final results can be viewed, compared, and evaluated in the same way. With cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) on track to surpass X‐ray crystallography as the preferred method ...

Computationally efficient approximation for the double bootstrap mean bias correction [PDF]

open access: yes
We propose a computationally efficient approximation for the double bootstrap bias adjustment factor without using the inner bootstrap loop. The approximation converges in probability to the population bias correction factor.

BCG vaccination potentiates oxidative phosphorylation in neonatal myeloid‐derived suppressor cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
BCG vaccination enhances oxidative phosphorylation in neonatal MDSCs, impairing their immunosuppressive function. It upregulates electron transport chain genes and mitochondrial activity, increasing ATP and oxygen consumption. Pharmacological OXPHOS inhibition partially restores suppressive capacity, confirming causality.

Selection-bias correction based on the multinomial logit: An application to the Mexican labor market [PDF]

open access: yes
In this presentation, we illustrate an application of a relatively new selection-bias correction methodology based on the multinomial logit model using the selmlog Stata command (Bourguignon, Fournier, and Gurgand, 2007, Journal of Economic Surveys 21 ...

The systematic bias of ingestible core temperature sensors requires a correction by linear regression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
An accurate measure of core body temperature is critical for monitoring individuals, groups and teams undertaking physical activity in situations of high heat stress or prolonged cold exposure.

Evaluating GenAI‐produced feedback on undergraduate bioscience essays against good higher education feedback practice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This pilot study investigates the potential of Generative AI to provide formative feedback to students. ChatGPT was prompted to provide feedback on Year 1 Bioscience essays, which were evaluated against established good feedback practices. GenAI‐authored feedback had useful elements, but was limited in scope. GenAI may have potential to provide instant,

On the importance of historical context and bias correction in deep learning MJO prediction models

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
At present, state-of-the-art predictions for the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) combine forecasts from numerical weather models together with bias-correction methods.
