Examining the influence of sociodemographics, residential segregation, and historical redlining on eBird and iNaturalist data disparities in three U.S. cities

open access: yesEcology and Society
Ecologists often leverage contributory science, also referred to as citizen science, to answer large-scale spatial and temporal biodiversity questions.

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Biases in the distribution of bilateral aid: a regional decomposition analysis

open access: yes
This paper investigates income and population biases in the distribution of aid and decomposes recipients by geographic region. Previous analyses aggregate recipients and assume biases have an equal impact.

Learning visual biases from human imagination

open access: yes, 2015
Although the human visual system can recognize many concepts under challengingconditions, it still has some biases. In this paper, we investigate whether wecan extract these biases and transfer them into a machine recognition system. We introduce a novel ...

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Aggregation and Other Biases in the Calculation of Consumer Elasticities for Models of Arbitrary Rank [PDF]

open access: yes
Consumer-related policy decisions often require analysis of aggregate responses or mean elasticities. However, in practice these mean elasticities are seldom used.

Delusions, cognitive biases and emotional priming [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
Evidence has been accumulated to suggest that cognitive biases in reasoning and information processing would play an important role in the mechanism of delusions (Bentall, 1994; Garety & Hemsley, 1994).
