Sex differences in bicuspid aortic valve disease

open access: yesProgress in Cardiovascular Diseases, 2020
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), the most frequent congenital heart disease, is characterized by an uneven distribution between sexes. BAV is three to four times more frequent in men than in women which could be associated with a reduced dosage of X chromosome genes.

Early results of geometric ring annuloplasty for bicuspid aortic valve repair during aortic aneurysm surgeryCentral MessagePerspective

open access: yesJTCVS Techniques, 2022
Objectives: Geometric ring annuloplasty has shown promise during bicuspid aortic valve repair for aortic insufficiency. This study examined early outcomes of bicuspid aortic valve repair associated with proximal aortic aneurysm replacement. Methods: From

A retrospective analysis of mitral valve pathology in the setting of bicuspid aortic valves

open access: yesEcho Research and Practice, 2017
The therapeutic implications of bicuspid aortic valve associations have come under scrutiny in the transcatheter aortic valve implantation era. We evaluate the spectrum of mitral valve disease in patients with bicuspid aortic valves to determine the need

Annular and supra-annular structure assessments for transcatheter aortic valve replacement in patients with bicuspid aortic stenosis

open access: yesReviews in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2021
The clinical use indications for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for the treatment of severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) have expanded from patients at high surgical risk to those at low risk based on the results of multiple large ...

Contribution of Oxidative Stress (OS) in Calcific Aortic Valve Disease (CAVD): From Pathophysiology to Therapeutic Targets

open access: yesCells, 2022
Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is a major cause of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity, with increased prevalence and incidence. The underlying mechanisms behind CAVD are complex, and are mainly illustrated by inflammation, mechanical stress ...

Evolution of Precision Medicine and Surgical Strategies for Bicuspid Aortic Valve-Associated Aortopathy

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2017
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a common congenital cardiac malformation affecting 1–2% of people. BAV results from fusion of two adjacent aortic valve cusps, and is associated with dilatation of the aorta, known as bicuspid valve associated aortopathy ...

Establishment and characterization of human induced pluripotent stem cell line (WMUi020-A) from a patient with bicuspid aortic valve aortopathy

open access: yesStem Cell Research, 2021
A human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) line (WMUi020-A) was generated from the aortic smooth muscle cells of a 56-year-old donor with bicuspid aortic valve and ascending aortic aneurysm.
