Restriction endonucleases from Bifidobacterium bifidum [PDF]
Three restriction endonucleases, BbiI, BbiII and BbiIII, have been isolated from Bifidobacterium bifidum. The recognition and cleavage specificity of BbiII was determined to be 5'‐GR↓CGYC‐3', identical to that of AcyI isolated from a cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica.

Safety Evaluations of Bifidobacterium bifidum BGN4 and Bifidobacterium longum BORI [PDF]
Over the past decade, a variety of lactic acid bacteria have been commercially available to and steadily used by consumers. However, recent studies have shown that some lactic acid bacteria produce toxic substances and display properties of virulence. To establish safety guidelines for lactic acid bacteria, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the ...

Complete Genome Sequence of Bifidobacterium bifidum S17 [PDF]
ABSTRACT Here, we report on the first completely annotated genome sequence of a Bifidobacterium bifidum strain. B. bifidum S17, isolated from feces of a breast-fed infant, was shown to strongly adhere to intestinal epithelial cells and has potent anti-inflammatory activity

Galactokinase of Bifidobacterium bifidum.
Crystalline galactokinase was obtained in good yield from Bifidobacterium bifidum grown on galactose medium. This preparation moved as a single protein band in analytical disc electrophoresis and sedimented as a single symmetrical peak under ultracentrifugation.

Bifidobacteria exhibit social behavior through carbohydrate resource sharing in the gut [PDF]
Bifidobacteria are common and frequently dominant members of the gut microbiota of many animals, including mammals and insects. Carbohydrates are considered key carbon sources for the gut microbiota, imposing strong selective pressure on the complex ...

Encapsulation of Bifidobacterium longum in alginate-dairy matrices and survival in simulated gastrointestinal conditions, refrigeration, cow milk and goat milk [PDF]
The aim of this study was to microencapsulate Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis CCUG 52486 using the extrusion method in a variety of matrices, namely sodium alginate (SA), sodium alginate-cow milk (SACM), sodium alginate-goat milk (SAGM) and sodium

Comparative composition, diversity, and abundance of oligosaccharides in early lactation milk from commercial dairy and beef cows. [PDF]
Prebiotics are nondigestible dietary ingredients, usually oligosaccharides (OS), that provide a health benefit to the host by directly modulating the gut microbiota.

Evolution of substrate specificity in a retained enzyme driven by gene loss. [PDF]
The connection between gene loss and the functional adaptation of retained proteins is still poorly understood. We apply phylogenomics and metabolic modeling to detect bacterial species that are evolving by gene loss, with the finding that ...
