Male mammal copulatory structures such as the baculum (penile bone) are ideal for studying these processes because of their complexity and high interspecific variability. The material is stable and show high specific capacity, the reaction mechanism has been thoroughly investigated and comprehensively described and involves a phase change reaction followed by sodium intercalation.
