Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

A SIR Model with Incomplete Data for the Analysis of Influenza A Spread in Ningbo

open access: yesDiscrete Dynamics in Nature and Society
In this article, the SIR model is used to fit the spread of influenza A in Ningbo, ranging from January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2023. The data that can be collected is the daily newly confirmed cases, but the daily number of infected individuals and ...

Challenges and Opportunities in Big Data Processing

open access: yes, 2016
The development and extensive use of highly distributed and scalable systems to process Big Data have been widely considered. New data management architectures, e.g. distributed file systems and NoSQL databases, are used in this context.

Big Data Refinement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
"Big data" has become a major area of research and associated funding, as well as a focus of utopian thinking. In the still growing research community, one of the favourite optimistic analogies for data processing is that of the oil refinery, extracting ...

Big Data, Big Opportunities, and Big Challenges [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Dermatology Symposium Proceedings, 2015
High-throughput assays have begun to revolutionize modern biology and medicine. The advent of cheap next-generation sequencing (NGS) has made it possible to interrogate cells and human populations as never before. Although this has allowed us to investigate the genetics, gene expression, and impacts of the microbiome, there remain both practical and ...

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Big Data: Big Challenges to Privacy and Data Protection

open access: yes, 2015
This paper seeks to analyse the benefits of big data and more importantly the challenges it pose to the subject of privacy and data protection. First, the nature of big data will be briefly deliberated before presenting the potential of big data in the ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Untargeted poisoning attack based on fake clients and its defense in federated learning

open access: yesCybersecurity
Untargeted poisoning attacks pose a serious threat to federated learning. However, existing untargeted poisoning attacks have limitations. Most attacks assume that the adversary can control a large number of real clients, which is difficult to achieve in
