A Bilingual Speech Synthesis System of Standard Malay and Indonesian Based on HMM-DNN

International Conference on Asian Language Processing, 2020
This paper designs and implements a Standard Malay and Indonesian bilingual speech synthesis system based on HMM-DNN. Standard Malay and Indonesian have high homology and relatively few electronic language resources.

Bilingual speech: Bilateral control?

Brain and Language, 1982
Abstract Forty bilinguals from several language backgrounds were contrasted to a group of English-speaking monolinguals on a verbal-manual interference paradigm. For the monolinguals, concurrent finger-tapping rate during speech output tasks was disrupted only for the right hand, indicating left-hemisphere language dominance.

Speech-language pathologists’ perceptions of childhood bilingualism

Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics, 2023
The value of learning multiple languages has increased in the past 20 years. Despite this, some professionals continue to provide misinformation about bilingualism to many families around the United States, resulting in recommendations of implementing a monolingual approach for children.

Chinese-English bilingual speech recognition

International Conference on Natural Language Processing and Knowledge Engineering, 2003. Proceedings. 2003, 2004
Two methods of construct a Chinese-English bilingual phone inventory are proposed and investigated. Our research focuses on a robust, suitable and compact phone combination of the two utterly different languages. The first method is to combine Chinese phonemes and English phonemes together.

Investigating a bilingual advantage when inhibiting irrelevant speech: inhibiting bilingual irrelevant speech

2021
Although there has been much research into bilingual language processing, and the advantages that are associated with bilingualism, not much research has been conducted on the role of attention in bilingual processing. This study uses the irrelevant speech effect paradigm, a recall task that plays irrelevant speech during memorization in order to study

Bilingual representation of speech sounds in Chinese-Japanese bilinguals

2016 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation, 2016
This study is to explore the speech processing of second language. Chinese-Japanese bilinguals were selected to detect the characteristics of bilingual speech processing and bilingual representation through a vowel-identifying behavioural experiment.

Code-Switched Speech Synthesis Using Bilingual Phonetic Posteriorgram with Only Monolingual Corpora

IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2020
Synthesizing fluent code-switched (CS) speech with consistent voice using only monolingual corpora is still a challenging task, since language alternation seldom occurs during training and the speaker identity is directly correlated with language.

Speech production units among bilinguals

Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 1996
This paper discusses processing units in speech production among bilinguals. First, naturally occurring intrasentential code-switching (switching languages within a sentence) was examined to show that bilinguals switch at syntactically definable constituent boundaries.

Bilingual speech associations in phonetic representation

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2018
Listeners unconsciously index race, gender, and sexual orientation from little phonetic input. Psycholinguistic theory attributes this to a representation of language where episodic traces encode fine, speaker-specific acoustic detail. We examined this unconscious linguistic bias in a task with native English speaker participants.

Bilinguals' comprehension of foreign-accented speech

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2020
Foreign accents represent a common challenge to successful speech recognition, and while much has been uncovered about the factors contributing to the intelligibility of foreign-accented speech, most of it is based on data from monolingual listeners.
