BILIRUBIN ENCEPHALOPATHY

Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology, 1983
In babies of low birth weight dying in the first week of life, bilirubin encephalopathy involving the thalamus only or the thalamus and one or two other areas occurred in nineteen of 376 cases examined over a 10 year period. Although coexistent germinal layer haemorrhage was present in sixteen, this was not thought to be an aetiological factor.

Effects of bilirubin and its photoisomers on direct bilirubin measurement using bilirubin oxidase

Annals of Clinical Biochemistry, 2000
We examined the reactivity of human serum albumin-bound bilirubin and its photoisomers as substrates for a direct bilirubin assay using bilirubin oxidase. The reduction of (EZ)-cyclobilirubin reached 100% 5 min after addition of the enzyme at any pH tested (3·5–7·4) in 0·1 mol/L phosphate buffer, whereas the reduction of (ZE)-bilirubin or (ZZ ...

The Neurotoxicity of Bilirubin

Clinics in Perinatology, 1990
Recent clinical and research findings on kernicterus and bilirubin toxicity are reviewed. Bilirubin binds to cell membranes and appears to interfere with the metabolism, depolarization, and transmitter functions of neurons. The neurobehavioral and clinical findings associated with bilirubin encephalopathy and low bilirubin kernicterus are presented and

Photochemistry of bilirubin

Experientia, 1971

Conjugated Bilirubin Versus Direct Bilirubin in Neonates

American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1986
Conjugated and direct bilirubin were measured in 288 samples from 107 neonates less than 15 days old. Retrospective analysis of the medical records showed that 53 neonates were hepatobiliary-normal, 42 patients had no obvious evidence of hepatobiliary disease but had received total parenteral nutrition, and 12 were clearly hepatobiliary-abnormal ...

Kinetics of bilirubin oxidase and modeling of an immobilized bilirubin oxidase reactor for bilirubin detoxification

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1988
AbstractThe unbound bilirubin concentration and the enzymatic rate of bilirubin degradation by bilirubin oxidase in bilirubin‐serum albumin solutions have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. A stoichiometric bilirubin‐serum albumin binding analysis shows that the unbound bilirubin concentration depends only on the molar ratio of the ...

Embryotoxicity of bilirubin

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1977
Intraperitoneal injection of bilirubin in a dosage of 25 mg. per kilogram during the days nine to 15 of gestation in bile duct-ligated heterozygous Gunn rats was embryotoxic. Bile duct ligation per se had no gross observable effects on fetal development.
