Influence of bimoment on the torsional and flexural–torsional elastic stability of thin-walled beams

open access: yesThin-Walled Structures, 2015
Abstract This article studies the influence of the bimoment on the buckling of thin-walled beams with open cross section subjected to axial loading. In the case of torsional and torsional-flexural buckling of thin-walled Z-section beam, it is shown that influence of the bimoment could be of importance in the assessment of buckling loads.

Bimoment Contribution to Buckling of Thin-Walled Beams with Different Boundary Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Engineering Mechanics - ASCE, 2017
AbstractIn this paper the influence of bimoment, induced by external axial loads, on the global buckling of thin-walled Z-section beams, subjected to different boundary conditions, is studied.

Torsional buckling of thin-walled beams in presence of bimoment induced by axial loads [PDF]

open access: yesTehnicki Vjesnik, 2015
In this paper the influence of the bimoment induced by external axial loads on the elastic torsional buckling of thin-walled beams with open cross-section is studied. The governing differential equations of a deformed thin-walled beam consistent with Vlasov's classical assumptions are derived applying the principle of virtual displacements. It is shown

Twist Control of an I-beam Through Vlasov Bimoment Actuation

open access: yes49th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference
16th AIAA/ASME/AHS Adaptive Structures Conference
10t, 2008
The research presented in this paper examines the twisting of an I-beam spar through the application of differential axial loads (Vlasov bimoments). This is of interest for variable twist helicopter rotor blades where the outboard 12 − 32% of the blade can undergo large quasi-static twist variations for optimal performance over diverse operating ...

Bimoment theory construction to assess the stress state of thick orthotropic plates

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2020
Abstract The paper is devoted to the development of a theory and method for calculating thick plates. A detailed analysis of well-known publications devoted to this problem is given. A theory and a method were developed to assess the stress-strain state of thick plates without simplifying hypotheses within the framework of three ...

Bimoment contribution to stability of thin-walled assemblages

Computers and Structures, 1980
Abstract A finite element formulation for stability problems of structures assembled from thin-walled members with open crosssection is presented. The contribution of bimoment toward stability of unsymmetrical sections is included. Using the solutions of the homogeneous differential equations governing the static behavior as deformation modes, the ...

Yield Surfaces for I‐Sections with Bimoments

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1989
This paper presents the yield‐surface diagrams for an I‐section subjected to five active‐stress resultants, including the axial compression, two bending moments, torsion, and bimoment. The difficulties involved in establishing the five‐dimensional yield‐surface equations are circumvented through the adoption of a parametric approach.
