Binarizing complex scanned documents

2015 13th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR), 2015
Most binarization algorithms are suitable for scanned text documents and do not work adequately with complex documents that encompass photos, charts and text simultaneously. This paper presents a new binarization algorithm that works on complex documents.

A Multiscale Morphological Binarization Algorithm

2010
Image binarization is widely used to generate more appropriate images to be used in several image analysis and understanding systems, as well as to facilitate data management and decrease storage space requirements. The main difficulties arise from the fact that images are frequently degraded by noise and non-uniform illumination, for example.

A technique for fuzzy document binarization

Proceedings of the 2001 ACM Symposium on Document engineering, 2001
This paper proposes a new method for fuzzy binarization of digital document. The proposed approach achieves binarization using both the image gray-levels and additional local spatial features. Both, gray-level and local features values feed a Kohonen Self-Organized Feature Map (SOFM) neural network classifier.

Binarization of MultiSpectral Document Images

2015
This work is concerned with the binarization of document images caputured by MultiSpectral Imaging MSI systems. The documents imaged are historical manuscripts and MSI is used to gather more information compared to traditional RGB photographs or scans.

Binarization using associative addressing

Pattern Recognition, 1974
Abstract For use in hand-printed character recognition, this paper introduces a method of binarization that can cope with quite large and abrupt changes of the grey levels of black and white. The binarizing threshold is a piece-wise linear function of a local maximum white level, and this function is conveniently implemented by means of associative ...
