Gaussian Image Binarization

International Journal of Image and Graphics, 2021
Line drawing and screentoning are two distinct areas of study in non-photorealistic rendering, where the former emphasizes object contours, while the latter conveys tone and shading information on object surfaces. As these two problems are concerned with different yet equally important features, either method seldom delivers a complete description of ...

CONNECTIONIST MODEL BINARIZATION

International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, 1991
Image binarization is a task to convert gray-level images into bi-level ones. Its underlying notion can be simply thought of as threshold selection. However, the result of binarization will cause significant influence on the process of image recognition or understanding.

Nonparametric optimal binarization

Proceedings. Fourteenth International Conference on Pattern Recognition (Cat. No.98EX170), 2002
Binarization is reduced to function approximation in terms of quantization which is overlaid either with a recursion scheme or with discrete scale-space filtering. Approximations are solved to optimality not requiring any parametric input except that there be two segment classes of the image.

Adaptive document binarization

Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2002
A new method is presented for adaptive document image binarization, where the page is considered as a collection of subcomponents such as text, background and picture. The problems caused by noise, illumination and many source type related degradations are addressed.

To binarize or not to binarize: relational data and the construction of archaeological networks

Journal of Archaeological Science, 2013
Abstract Over the last several years, network methods and models from the social and physical sciences have gained considerable popularity in archaeology. Many of the most common network methods begin with the creation of binary networks where links among some set of actors are defined as either present or absent.

Rotation and Binarity

International Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1976
SummaryThe observational data bearing upon rotation and binarity are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed upon some anomalies in the behaviour of close binaries. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the progress on these subjects since the last Ap star meeting.

A document binarization method based on connected operators

open access: yesPattern Recognition Letters, 2010
International audienceAn original binarization method based on connected operators is proposed in this paper. Connected operators enable to filter and/or segment an image by preserving its contours.

A combined approach for the binarization of handwritten document images

open access: yesPattern Recognition Letters, 2014
There are many challenges addressed in handwritten document image binarization, such as faint characters, bleed-through and large background ink stains. Usually, binarization methods cannot deal with all the degradation types effectively.
