A Systematic Search for Redback and Black Widow Candidates Based on the 4FGL-DR3 Unassociated Sources and the Zwicky Transient Facility Data

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Spider pulsars represent a unique subclass of radio millisecond pulsars in binaries, and are further categorized into black widows and redbacks according to the mass of the low-mass companion.

Gravitational wave astronomy of single sources with a pulsar timing array

open access: yes, 2011
Abbreviated: We investigate the potential of detecting the gravitational wave from individual binary black hole systems using pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) and calculate the accuracy for determining the GW properties.

Testing Gravity with Binary Pulsars in the SKA Era

open access: yesThe Open Journal of Astrophysics
Binary (and trinary) radio pulsars are natural laboratories in space for understanding gravity in the strong field regime, with many unique and precise tests carried out so far, including the most precise tests of the strong equivalence principle and of ...

Gamma Ray Signal from the Pulsar Wind in the Binary Pulsar system PSR B1259-63/LS2883

open access: yes, 2011
Binary pulsar systems emit potentially detectable components of gamma ray emission due to Comptonization of the optical radiation of the companion star by relativistic electrons of the pulsar wind, both before and after termination of the wind.

Geodetic Precession in Binary Pulsars [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1987
We have calculated the probability of observing geodetic precession in the binary pulsar PSR1913+16 for several different progenitor systems. Such an observation would support the asymmetric kick hypothesis for the origin of pular velocities. The results are shown to be dependent on the assumed progenitor but not to a strong degree.

The Orbital Parameters of Gamma-Ray Binary PSR J2032+4127

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
PSR J2032+4127 is the only gamma-ray binary that exhibits pulsations in gamma rays. Previous research has indicated that the pulsar and the Be star MT91 213 orbit each other in a highly eccentric orbit with an extremely long period, with the pulsar ...

The Confrontation between General Relativity and Experiment

open access: yesLiving Reviews in Relativity, 2014
The status of experimental tests of general relativity and of theoretical frameworks for analyzing them is reviewed and updated. Einstein’s equivalence principle (EEP) is well supported by experiments such as the Eötvös experiment, tests of local Lorentz

Spindown of Pulsars Interacting with Companion Winds: The Impact of Magnetospheric Compression

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Pulsars in binary systems with strong companion winds can have the magnetopause separating their magnetosphere from the wind located well within their light cylinder.

The Neutron Star Mass, Distance, and Inclination from Precision Timing of the Brilliant Millisecond Pulsar J0437-4715

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
The observation of neutron stars enables the otherwise impossible study of fundamental physical processes. The timing of binary radio pulsars is particularly powerful, as it enables precise characterization of their (three-dimensional) positions and ...

Acceleration by pulsar winds in binary systems [PDF]

open access: yes
In the absence of accretion torques, a pulsar in a binary system will spin down due to electromagnetic dipole radiation and the spin-down power will drive a wind of relativistic electron-positron pairs.
