Whale Rover for Bio-Logging

2018 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM), 2018
Bio-logging is a technique using data loggers attached to the bodies of animals to conduct ecological surveys. It is applied to sperm whales and provides valuable information about their diving depth, swimming velocity, and other habits. Zoologists are trying to capture video data of preying sperm whales, as no one has yet seen what happens when a ...

Underwater drone for bio-logging of sperm whale

2017 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation (ICMA), 2017
Bio-logging enables zoologists to reveal the many mysteries of free-range animals. It enables valuable scientific data to be gathered without disturbing their daily life, using a small data logger attached to their body. Several zoologists have applied the bio-logging approach to reveal the behavior of sperm whales by attaching data loggers onto their ...

A Review: Marine Bio-logging of Animal Behaviour and Ocean Environments

Ocean Science Journal, 2021
Recent technologies have allowed researchers to observe animal behaviour and monitor their surrounding environments by deploying electronic sensors onto the animals. So-called ‘bio-logging’ (also known as animal telemetry, biotelemetry, or animal-borne sensors) has been widely used to study marine animals that are difficult for humans to observe.

Rigid Body Motions Estimation Using Inertial Sensors: Bio-Logging Application

IFAC proceedings volumes, 2009
Abstract Bio-logging is a new interdisciplinary research area at the intersection of animal behavior and bioengineering. It can involve several applications such as determination of specific parameters measurements (attitude, acceleration, and position) via a new generation of adapted-animal mechatronic systems (a.d.a.m.s.).

MEMS based Low-Power Multi-Sensors device for Bio-Logging Applications

2021 Symposium on Design, Test, Integration & Packaging of MEMS and MOEMS (DTIP), 2021
This paper presents a low-power recorder for bio- logging applications. Based on 3 MEMS sensors, it provides up to 750h of 8kHz audio, 50Hz accelerometer and 10Hz magnetometer time-aligned data using a compact 1950mAH Li- Ion battery. This work comes as a follow-up of a previous study concerning an audio-only device.

Bio-logging of physiological parameters in higher marine vertebrates

Deep Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography, 2007
Abstract Bio-logging of physiological parameters in higher marine vertebrates had its origins in the field of bio-telemetry in the 1960s and 1970s. The development of microprocessor technology allowed its first application to bio-logging investigations of Weddell seal diving physiology in the early 1980s.

Report on the 5th International Bio-logging Symposium

2014
Abstract : Bio-logging originated in the marine (polar) realm, which explains why marine mammals remain today the main biological models in bio-logging studies. We anticipate seeing state-of-the-art technologies, including acoustic tagging, 3-D trajectories reconstruction and environment monitoring devices (e.g.

Bio-logging as a Method for Understanding Natural Systems

International Conference on Informatics Education and Research for Knowledge-Circulating Society (icks 2008), 2008
Obtaining new information on the natural world involves direct observation, measurement and experimentation. However, this can be challenging for species that are very small, cryptic, sensitive, fragile, rare, dangerous or live in extreme environments.
