The significance of biodegradability in the treatment and discharge of waste waters to natural bodies of water is discussed. Various methods of assessing biodegradability are described and their limitations illustrated by a consideration of the characteristics of bacterial growth and metabolism, including the phenomenon of co-metabolism.

Biodegradability and Biodegradation of Polyesters
Journal of Polymers and the Environment, 2007A variety of biodegradable plastics have been developed in order to obtain useful materials that do not cause harm to the environment. Among the biodegradable plastics, aliphatic polyesters such as: poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), and poly(l-lactide) (PLA) have become the focus of interest ...

Biodegradation of oxo‐biodegradable polyethylene
Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2008AbstractBiodegradation of polyethylene and oxo‐biodegradable polyethylene films was studied in this work. Abiotic oxidation, which is the first stage of oxo‐biodegradation, was carried out for a period corresponding to 4 years of thermo‐oxidation at composting temperatures. The oxidation was followed by biodegradation, which was achieved by inoculating

Biodegradation data evaluation for structure/biodegradability relations
Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 1987Abstract Previous attempts at structure/biodegradability relations (SBRs) and available biodegradation data are reviewed and it is concluded that (1) not enough rate data on large numbers of chemicals are available to develop quantitative SBRs and (2) attempted qualitative SBRs have suffered from either poor documentation of the ...

Biodegradable stents and non-biodegradable stents.
Minerva cardioangiologica, 2009The introduction of the coronary stent in 1986 was one of the most far-reaching changes in the practice of interventional cardiology since its inception in 1977. Despite all the benefits of the using a metallic drug eluting stent (DES), their limitations have generated interest towards biodegradable technology.

Biodegradation of Biodegradable Polymeric Materials
2023Bioplastics are not just one single material They comprise of a whole family of materials with different properties and applications. According to European Bioplastics, a plastic material is defined as a bioplastic if it is either biobased, biodegradable, or features both properties.Biobased is the material or product (partly) derived from biomass ...

Biodegradation of biodegradable solid waste
2017Nowadays, the disposal of solid waste is a major problem in the world, included Croatia. There are different treatments like physical-chemical, thermal and biological. Based on physical and chemical characterization of waste, profitability and influence on ecology the appropriated treatment is selected. On the aspect of ecology the biological treatment
