Enhanced mitochondrial respiration in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from young children with overweight/obesity and insulin resistance

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, EarlyView.
We investigated measures of mitochondrial function in certain types of blood cells and metabolism in 65 children, 5–10 years old. Compared to children of normal weight (n = 20), children with overweight/obesity (n = 28) and especially those with insulin resistance (n = 17), differed in how their cells produced energy.

Medical and Nutritional Outcomes Are Similar Among Autologous Transplant Patients on Enteral Nutrition When Compared to Parenteral Nutrition. A Randomized Pilot Study

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) is the treatment for myeloma and lymphoma. posttreatment, significant nutritional and medical issues and malnutrition assessed by Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) arise. No established effective treatment for using either parenteral (PN) or enteral routes (EN) to improve nutritional ...

The Impact of Dietary Intake and Nutritional Status on the Oral Health of Older Adults Living in Care Homes: A Scoping Review

open access: yesGerodontology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives To review the literature on the relationship between oral health, dietary intake, and nutritional status in older adults in care homes, identifying research gaps. Background Many older adults in care homes retain natural teeth but face oral health issues due to challenges in maintaining hygiene and limited dental care access.

Whether a polyethylene terephthalate bottle cap can be opened could serve as a common indicator for locomotive syndrome, frailty and sarcopenia

open access: yesGeriatrics &Gerontology International, EarlyView.
This study demonstrated that the inability to open a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle cap was associated with a 2.72‐fold increased risk of locomotive syndrome (LS) stages 2 and 3, 3.38‐fold for frailty, and 3.61‐fold for sarcopenia. Moreover, this inability showed potential as a simple case‐finding tool for identifying individuals at risk of LS

Self‐reported autonomic dysfunction could be a predictive marker for sarcopenia in Parkinson's disease

open access: yesGeriatrics &Gerontology International, EarlyView.
Autonomic dysfunction, assessed by the Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease‐Autonomic Questionnaire, was significantly associated with sarcopenia in patients with Parkinson's disease. Among all autonomic domains, the gastrointestinal score had the strongest predictive ability for sarcopenia.

Hemodynamic Monitoring During Hemodialysis Using Bioimpedance: A Comparison of Changes in Resistance Between Different Body Segments

open access: yesHemodialysis International, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Prevention of hemodynamic complications during hemodialysis remains challenging. Although whole body bioimpedance is well established in fluid status assessment, its use for dynamic or continuous recordings is limited. A segmental approach may serve this purpose better.
