Bioelectrocatalysis: the electrochemical kinetics of hydrogenase action

A hydrogen electrode based on a hydrogenase immobilized on a carbon material has been developed. The equilibrium hydrogen potential was reached in an atmosphere of H2 on the enzyme electrode according to the mechanism of direct exchange of electrons between the electrode and the enzyme active center.

Self-assembled monolayers of thiolated compounds are used as promoters for protein-electrode reactions. They provide an anchor group based on thiol chemisorptions and also a functional group for effective interaction with the protein. These interactions are often governed by electrostatic attraction.
