Marine aerobic biofilm as biocathode catalyst [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Stainless steel electrodes were immersed in open seawater and polarized for some days at − 200 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The current increase indicated the formation of biofilms that catalysed the electrochemical reduction of oxygen.

Tooth mousse containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate prevents biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans

open access: yesBMC Oral Health, 2021
Background Streptococcus mutans is a common cariogenic bacterium in the oral cavity involved in plaque formation. Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) has been introduced into tooth mousse to encourage remineralization of dental ...

DENTA: A Dual Enzymatic Nanoagent for Self‐Activating Tooth Whitening and Biofilm Disruption

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The nanoapatite with dual enzymes (DENTA) accumulates in dentinal tubules, reducing hypersensitivity caused by dental nerve exposure and facilitating continuous ROS generation through salivary glucose for effective, long‐term whitening. The dentin structures remain non‐destructive due to the low concentration of ROS, demonstrating excellent cell ...

Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP): an overlooked factor in the process of biofilm formation in aquatic environments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We hypothesize that transparent exopolymer particles (TEP), present in high concentrations in most sea and freshwaters, are critical agents for biofilm initiation and development in many natural and anthropogenic aquatic environments.

A Numerical Model for Enzymatically Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Enzymatically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (EICP) is an emerging engineered mineralization method similar to others such as microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP).

Host‐Directed Biomaterials for Combatting Bloodstream Infections: From Macrocyclic Peptides to Immune‐Activating Cell Backpacks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bloodstream infections (BSI) are one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in both civilian and military populations. This paper summarizes recent progress in novel treatment strategies to manage BSI arising from both bacterial and fungal pathogens using molecules, particles, and materials to elicit host‐directed immunity.

Dynamic processing of DOM: Insight from exometabolomics, fluorescence spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, 2018
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in freshwater environments is an important source of organic carbon, supporting bacterial respiration. Frozen environments cover vast expanses of our planet, with glaciers and ice‐sheets storing upwards of 6 petagrams of ...

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...
