Bioinformatics in bioinorganic chemistry
Metallomics, 2010Bioinformatics is a central discipline in modern life sciences aimed at describing the complex properties of living organisms starting from large-scale data sets of cellular constituents such as genes and proteins. In order for this wealth of information to provide useful biological knowledge, databases and software tools for data collection, analysis ...

A particularly exciting development in 2003 has been the publication of the X-ray crystal structure of acetyl-coenzyme A synthase/CO dehydrogenase from Moorella thermoacetica at a resolution of 1.9 A. The protein contains two Ni-containing active sites that catalyse distinct CO transformations.

Bioinorganic Chemistry starts with an introduction. The text then moves on to look at bio-elements in the periodic table, the alkaline and alkaline earth metals. The next chapter looks at iron. Chapter 5 is about oxygen transport and the respiratory chain. There follow chapters on oxidoreductases based on iron, manganese, and copper;

It is no wonder that many people are skeptical when they hear the term “bioinorganic chemistry”. The skepticism arises because inorganic matter is often considered the opposite of life. For instance, in Japan, Minamata disease (Hg) and Itai–itai disease (Cd) are caused by inorganic matter.
