Sacrificing Wilderness for Renewables? Land Artificialization from Inadequate Spatial Planning of Wind Energy in Evvoia, Greece

open access: yesLand
The REPowerEU Plan calls for a massive speed-up of renewable energy, which can undermine nature conservation. We explored the impact of an industrial-scale wind power project planned inside a Natura 2000 site (Special Protected Areas for birds) in the ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Mapping Balkan chamois habitat use and assessing human disturbance and renewable energy impacts on Mount Oiti, Greece

open access: yesDiscover Conservation
The Balkan chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica) is a protected ungulate with poor conservation status in Greece. We conducted seasonal surveys (2023) to collect 652 species’ occurrences on Mt. Oiti (study area: 156 km2).

Biology of Applied Digital Ecosystems

open access: yes, 2007
A primary motivation for our research in Digital Ecosystems is the desire to exploit the self-organising properties of biological ecosystems. Ecosystems are thought to be robust, scalable architectures that can automatically solve complex, dynamic ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

3D-Printed PLA Hollow Microneedles Loaded with Chitosan Nanoparticles for Colorimetric Glucose Detection in Sweat Using Machine Learning

open access: yesBiosensors
Biosensors play a central role in the early detection of abnormal glucose levels in individuals with diabetes; therefore, the development of less invasive systems is essential.

Statistical Model Checking for Biological Applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper we survey recent work on the use of statistical model checking techniques for biological applications. We begin with an overview of the basic modelling techniques for biochemical reactions and their corresponding stochastic simulation ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.
