Biological Control Agents for Control of Pests in Greenhouses

open access: yes, 2020
First we describe the different types of biocontrol used in greenhouses and present examples of each type. Next we summarize the history of greenhouse biocontrol, which started in 1926, showed a problematic period when synthetic chemical pesticides became available after 1945, and flourished again since the 1970s.

Selective vs. Broad-Spectrum Pesticides: When Do Private Decisions Differ from Socially Optimal Decisions? [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper examines the spatial externalities of conventional and organic pest control methods to determine if, and how, the two types affect each other. These interactions make the problem more complicated than the usual analysis of a single externality.

Shade trees decrease pest abundances on brassica crops in Kenya

open access: yes, 2019
Agroforestry practices may mitigate the current loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services due to deforestation and agricultural intensification. To examine the effects of agroforestry on the ecosystem service of pest regulation, we assessed pest ...

Ecological compatibility of GM crops and biological control [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant genetically modified (GM) crops pervade many modern cropping systems (especially field-cropping systems), and present challenges and opportunities for developing biologically based pest-management programs ...

Can outsourcing pest and disease control help reduce pesticide expenditure? Evidence from rice farmers

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
Abstract Outsourcing pest and disease control (PDC) has grown rapidly worldwide, especially in developing countries. Although numerous studies have investigated various advantages of outsourcing PDC, little is known about its impact on pesticide expenditure.

Biological control of pests in protected cultivation: implementation in Latin America and successes in Europe [PDF]

open access: yes
The area with greenhouse crops is estimated to be around 40,000 hectares in Latin America, of which approximately 60% is occupied with ornamentals. Several pests are responsible for losses in yield or quality of greenhouse crops production and pest ...

12. Biological control of livestock pests: entomopathogens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Interest in biological methods for livestock and poultry pest management is largely motivated by the development of resistance to most of the available synthetic pesticides by the major pests. There also has been a marked increase in organic systems, and those that promote animal welfare by reducing animal densities and allowing greater freedom of ...
