Protein kinase C activation increases transepithelial transport of biologically active insulin.
Cancer research, 1998Protein kinase C activation leads to tight junctional leakiness and, consequently, to increased transepithelial (paracellular) solute flux across epithelial barriers. This leakiness is shown here to result in as much as a 20-fold increase in the transepithelial flux of insulin.

Stochastic modeling of active biological transport in inhomogeneous environments

Saponins in Calendula officinalis L. – Structure, Biosynthesis, Transport and Biological Activity
Phytochemistry Reviews, 2005Trends in research on Calendula officinalis L. saponins performed in Department of Plant Biochemistry at Warsaw University are reviewed. Calendula officinalis, a well known medicinal plant, contains significant amounts of oleanane saponins, which form two distinct series of related compounds, called “glucosides” and “glucuronides” according to the ...

[Variability of biological glucose transport activity in human erythrocytes].
Comptes rendus des seances de la Societe de biologie et de ses filiales, 1992Glucose transport activity was determined on erythrocytes from healthy adult and children. A large variability of values was found between each donor, but transport rate was significantly higher in erythrocytes from adults than those from children. In opposite, the same number of glucose transport sites was found on erythrocytes from adult and children,

Active Ionic Transport across Biological Membranes: Possible Role of Electrons and Protons
Nature, 1970THE conversion of metabolic energy into useful work is a very efficient process in biological cells. The energy in ATP is transformed into mechanical, electrical and osmotic work at efficiencies which have been calculated to approach 100 per cent for acid secretion in the stomach1, active Na+ transport in frog skin2 and sartorius muscle contraction3 ...

Active transport across biological membranes : quantification and limits
Caco-2/MDCK assays are key tools for assessing compound permeability and active transport. The efflux ratio (ER) is often used to infer active efflux, but cannot be used as a direct measure of active transport. This work probes the viability of using intrinsic values to quantify efflux by extending existing models to incorporate aqueous boundary layersopenaire +1 more source

Chapter 23: Some Features of Solute Active Transport Across Biological Membranes
1976Publisher Summary This chapter concentrates on active transport that is a process requiring at least two distinct components: energy-coupling mechanisms and solute-specific membrane carrier. Typical concentration gradients may be 10 6 for phosphate transport in yeast, 10 7 for H + between gastric epithelium and stomach lumen, and 5 x 10 2 for ...
