Water transport across biological membranes [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1994
The rate of the lateral diffusion of straight‐chain phospholipids predicts the rate of water diffusion through bilayers. A new model of lipid dynamics integrates these processes. Substances such as cholesterol that reduce water diffision proportionally reduce lateral diffusion.

Decarbonising UK transport: Implications for electricity generation, land use and policy

open access: yesTransportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives, 2023
To ensure the UK’s net zero targets are met, the transition from conventionally fueled transport to low emission alternatives is necessary. The impact from increased decarbonised electricity generation on ecosystem services (ES) and natural capital (NC ...

An Interspecies Molecular and Functional Study of Organic Cation Transporters at the Blood-Brain Barrier: From Rodents to Humans

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2020
Organic cation transporters (OCTs) participate in the handling of compounds in kidneys and at the synaptic cleft. Their role at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in brain drug delivery is still unclear.

Rescue of dendritic cells from glycolysis inhibition improves cancer immunotherapy in mice

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Inhibition of glycolysis in immune cells and cancer cells diminishes their activity, and thus combining immunotherapies with glycolytic inhibitors is challenging.

Dual-Task Performance in Hearing-Impaired Older Adults—Study Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Mobile Brain/Body Imaging Study

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2021
Background: Hearing impairments are associated with reduced walking performance under Dual-task (DT) conditions. Little is known about the neural representation of DT performance while walking in this target group compared to healthy controls or younger ...

The impact of temporal sampling resolution on parameter inference for biological transport models [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Comput. Biol., 2017
Imaging data has become an essential tool to explore key biological questions at various scales, for example the motile behaviour of bacteria or the transport of mRNA, and it has the potential to transform our understanding of important transport ...

Temporal evaluation of efficacy and quality of tissue repair upon laser‐activated sealing

open access: yesBioengineering & Translational Medicine, 2023
Injuries caused by surgical incisions or traumatic lacerations compromise the structural and functional integrity of skin. Immediate approximation and robust repair of skin are critical to minimize occurrences of dehiscence and infection that can lead to

Effects of Polymer 3D Architecture, Size, and Chemistry on Biological Transport and Drug Delivery In Vitro and in Orthotopic Triple Negative Breast Cancer Models

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, 2020
The size, shape, and underlying chemistries of drug delivery particles are key parameters which govern their ultimate performance in vivo. Responsive particles are desirable for triggered drug delivery, achievable through architecture change and ...
