Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Biological Weapons Control: Prospects and Implications for the Future

open access: yes, 1997
The Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC), which prohibits the acquisition of biological materials for hostile purposes and armed conflict, entered into force in 1975 and now has the participation of 140 nations (158 nations have signed the BWC ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

The algae value chain landscape - a competitive technical challenge

open access: yes, 2009
Algae are a diverse group of organisms generally categorised as either macroalgae (i.e. seaweed), or microalgae, which are typically unicellular.

The biological value of proteins in mixed grass hays

open access: yes, 1961
Biological values of protein in grasshays cut in two years and at different times of the year were estimated in 9 trials with groups of 2 to 4 male Texel lambs, by different methods: 1) the method of Thomas and Mitchell: a) assuming a value of 3.438 for ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Decoding the dynamic extracellular matrix in cancer—3D models and bioscaffolds rewire the rules of tumor progression

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cancer progression is regulated by the dynamic matrix code of the tumor microenvironment, which influences cellular behavior and disease development. Importantly, matrix remodeling in three‐dimensional cancer models more accurately reflects in vivo conditions compared to conventional two‐dimensional systems.

A biophysical and economic evaluation of biological and chemical control methods for Solanum elaegnifolium (Silverleaf Nightshade) in the Limpopo province, South Africa

open access: yes, 2010
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 50-55).The results showed that the difference in the weed density was insignificant, indicating that biological and chemical control were both effective in the management of S. elaeagnifolium.
