Mining biomedical texts for disease-related pathways [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Workshop on Linking Natural Language Processing and Biology Towards Deeper Biological Literature Analysis - BioNLP '06, 2006
I will describe my collaborators' and my own effort to compile large models of molecular pathways in complex human disorders. The talk will address a number of interrelated questions: How to extract facts from texts at a large scale? How to assess the quality of the extracted facts?

Interpretability and Representability of Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Topology, and Topological Spectral Theory for Real‐World Data

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
This article investigates how persistent homology, persistent Laplacians, and persistent commutative algebra reveal complementary geometric, topological, and algebraic invariants or signatures of real‐world data. By analyzing shapes, synthetic complexes, fullerenes, and biomolecules, the article shows how these mathematical frameworks enhance ...

A Female‐Locust‐Inspired Hybrid Soft‐Stiff Robotic Digger: Mimetics and Implications for Digging Efficiency

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Female desert locusts dig underground to lay their eggs. They displace soil, rather than removing it, to create a tunnel. We analyze burrowing dynamics and 3D kinematics and design a locust‐inspired hybrid soft–stiff robot that reproduces this mechanism. The results show the natural strategy minimizes energy, whereas alternative patterns raise costs up
